Would really appreciate some help from you guys. Your previous replies to other member issues have helped me fix other problems over the past two years, but I am struggling at the moment.

Freelander TD4 auto with 120K has started cutting out after about 5 minutes when driving. Clouds of white smoke from exhaust and under bonnet (not from pre heater). No warning lights or fault codes show up on my cheap reader.

Engine cranks over but wont start. Leave it 2 or 3 hours and it starts. Should also mention that when idling, car is very juddery but this is not always the case - sometimes only when its warmed up

Have changed LP fuel pump and filter after first occasion. Changed fuel pressure sensor and upgrade harness after second occasion.

EGR was blanked off 2 years ago, MAF was changed for a pierburgh with a ronbox 18 months ago.

Can anyone point me in the right direction - got to get it fixed as its my wifes car and she has to get to hospital every Monday for treatment.

Really hope someone can help ...

When mine did the same thing it was HP Pump seals gone and firing diesel straight into crankcase - beware it may run on ! Starting after a few hours was, I guess, letting the excess fuel drain away - my oil filled up which could be a good test for you to do.

Remove the Ron box and pierburg maf sensor, replace with Bosch MAF and see how it goes from there, also change the PCV filter, check the cam sensor and of crank sensor, will it start with squirt of easy start?

Thanks for the replies.

Had a chance over the weekend to tinker.

The PCV was changed for the BMW version 18 months ago. The cam sensor was changed last week. I did a leak back test and all injectors are fine.

Started first time, smooth idle but white smoke from exhaust. Left running for 10 mins still white smoke. Increased revs to 3000 clouds of white smoke from exhaust and engine bay.

Turned engine off - no run on. No codes showing.

Removed elbow boost pipe, started first time, still white smoke at idle and load.

What is the view that the turbo has packed in? Coukld this be teh source of the white smoke in the engine bay (def not the pre heater) Not the news I want to hear but ....

Is there any oil dripping out the boost pipes?

Can you see where the smoke is coming from in the engine bay?

Did you see oil coming out the plastic pipe while the elbow pipe was removed?

Do you have the original PCV filter if so reinstate it and see if it make any difference, on the R40 club there have been a few problems with the BMW version of the same filter.

Cant see source of smoke in engine bay but it is coming up at the back right near the ecu.

Boost pipes are coated with oil.

Will order a new pcv today and see what happens

What sort of problems was the vortex filter throwing up
I've worked on several M47 engines and the M57 too, where lots of oil has made its was through the vortex and into the inlet manifold. This causes problems with the cat and an increase in oil consumption.
lso did you find that you needed to clean it more often than the recommended time

It seams that the increase in oil drawn through the vortex, clogs the PCV quite quickly. Additionally a lot of people fit n forget the vortex, thinking that it's a non serviceable item when done. But it's not designed as a permanent cure to cleaning the PCV.

This doesn't happen when the fluffy cotton wool filter filter is still fitted. This is why I prefer the disposable type as it mean a clean of the PCV at the same time.

Well, I've removed the ronbox and fitted a new Bosch MAF.White smoke on idle, clouds of white smoke when revved to 3000 briefly.

Turbo gone? Would a failing turbo cause the engine to die?
