Hi guys I’ve got a Freelander 1 td4 auto I’ve just purchased but there was no prop on it (obviously developed a fault) and they done away with. I’ve found a low mileage complete unit but it’s from a manual.

So the question is will it fit?

Yes I think all 4 cylinder FL1 props are the same.

Don't fit replacement props until you know what you're dealing with.

It MUST have 4 identical tyres, same make, same type, same size.

If the tyres are ok, you'll need change the oil in the IRD so you can see the oil colour. The props are often removed to hide a fault with the IRD. Changing the IRD oil will give you a reasonable indication of the condition of the IRD bearings. If the oil comes out with a grey or with metal particulates in it, then it's not suitable for 4X4 use before rebuild. Also removed the fill plug before the drain plug, as it's common for the plugs to round off, and refuse to undo. If you drain it, but can't fill it, you're stuck. Only use a hex socket for the plugs, as they are soft, causing them to round off.

Also if the IRD oil seems ok, then make sure the VCU isn't seized, or it'll destroy the IRD quickly.

Put a couple of heavy screwdrivers in the universal joints either side of the VCU and try to make it turn. If it moves with a bit of force it may not be too bad but if you can't budge it then don't fit it to the car.
Or of you do fit it then immediately do the one wheel up test to find out how bad it really is and be prepared to take it off again.
Either way you need to be certain it isn't so stiff it will wreck your transmission.
