Morning all,
Could I have some advice please? I'm suspecting/hoping my issue is due to the glow plugs needing replaced on my Freelander 1 TD4 and nothing more serious..
I'm having trouble when starting which is followed by a large plooms of smoke. My way around it is to turn the key to accessories, wait for the dashboard lights to go off and then repeat it two more times. The car then starts. There's a lot of white smoke and the engine doesn't idle too smoothly for the next few minutes. The white smoke lasts for a couple of miles. Any suggestions please?

If there are no fault codes the plugs is a good place to start. Obvs check feeds first to eliminate relay or wiring probs. To remove spray with penetrating oil a day or 2 before and remove with a six sided long socket when engine warm. Gentle action and maybe tighten / loosen technique should prevent them snapping off. Go easy though!

Presumably you are in a northern hemisphere summer?
Wouldn't mind betting that getting the glow plugs hotter is just reducing another issue - eg dirty/broken injectors.
I'd be inclined to add some injector cleaner to your fuel and/or get the injectors checked.

I haven't seen my glow plug light since April. The EDC doesn't power the plugs for starting, if the outside temperature is above about 15°C. The plugs are run for a short time after starting, but they aren't needed to start the TD5, unless it's very cold.
My guess it there's an injector bleeding down after shutdown, which takes time to purge though on starting, while burning off the fuel that collects in the piston chamber.

I had a progressively worsening starting problem with my 03 reg td4.
Changed the glow plugs and it was ok for a day, then returned to the problem.
Did a leak off test to check injectors, No. 1 ok, No. 2 very slight leak off, No. 3 ok.
Number 4 ... see picture. That was after about five seconds.
Fitted second hand injectors (after testing) all problems gone
