hi all. i'm new to this landrover game, i have a '55' reg freelander td4 with the BMW diesel engine in, when pulling away and steady throttle i am experiencing a rattle/knock from the engine, the car stutters slightly and has black smoke from exhaust,
It sounds to me like a timing issue or fuel.
Are there any problems with the diesel pumps or injectors on these cars?
All help greatly appreciated, thanks

thanks for your swift reply, the car has done 66000mls,i have just done a service on it including oil air and fuel filters, it has a full service history previous to that, not all done by a dealer.

Mine does EXACTLY the same. The black smoke is due to the engine needing time to warm up, but not too sure about the rattle! I guess it's a 4x4 and not a sports car at the end of the day and struggles a little at speed!!!!

Well. I experience the problem and there appears to be no answer on this thread!!!

Does anyone know the possible cause of the 'rattle'...

See my post to Defunct
I thought it was a noisy timing chain at first. As without a damper there is a large oscillation superimposed on the normal rotation of the crankshaft it does give the timing chain a hammering.

I am told by a neighbour, who is a mechanic that had a TD4 with a power problem, that during the time prior to fixing it ( which took loads of time and money) was very diesel sounding (rattle). he says mine is making the same noise, but so far performance is OK. after testing this and changing that, he found out that it was the underbonnet fuel pump. Since changing, the engine was much quieter and back to full power. Hopes this helps.

You could try cleaning and examining the electrical connection and wiring to the fuel rail pressure sensor.
