Hi all.

Again, have searched but not found a definitive answer.

Is it safe to add an oil flush to a TD4 prior to oil change?

I've seen a number of posts mentioning that not all the oil drains - therefore if there are galleries that hold onto the oil (which is now contaminated with Engine Flush), what's the danger??

Cheers,

Steve.

I would say that unless it has been done every 10K miles from new then don't bother, it will dislodge all the important gunk that holds all of the gaskets together in your engine, and eventually cause some kind of failure.

Thanks - that's an interesting take on things!

So, just regular oil changes from now on then! (Not sure when it was last done, but the oil looks very black......).

Its a diesel, if it isnt very black you've undone the wrong bung :)

Imho , diesels arent the dirty chuggers they used to be (unless your a tactor-boy, in which case they are,) so flushing it is a matter of preference.

If i was going to flush one , i'd add it hot, run it for 10 mins, jack it up at front end and drain it overnight to make sure it was all out. Also make sure you slacken off the oil filter cap first so it can all drain properly.

I have to admit that I have never considered using an oil flush, I know my dad used to use them in the dim & distant past but as long as oil changes are carried out at the prescribed intervals are they really necessary with modern engines & oils?

I do the oil & filter every 6-months on my wife's TD4 and in that time it has generally only covered about 3K miles. I use Castrol Edge (synthetic) so possibly this is over the top but it doesn't cost much or take very long so I don't mind.

Even though popular in the USA engine flushing has never really caught on in the UK. As long as you use a good quality diesel or synthetic oil you should experience no problems.
I have personally never known any garage, dealership or otherwise, flush even though they may try to charge for a flush.

Thanks all for the advice.
Maybe will do another oil change in a couple of months - as previously mentioned, not sure when last done, so one now, and another once the new oil has been used to 'flush' the system, and then I'll be happy!

Cheers!

engine flushes are just paraffin sold dearly should never need one if using good diesel engine oil, should contain enough detergent on its own, is not changing reulary enough or does the thought of paying for an extra feel better ,
