freelander td4 buying tips !!!

hi all. ive been out of the landrover picture for about 20 years now but im looking at buying a td4 freelander 5 door around a 02 and 53 plate, can anyone give me any advice on this vehicle e.g any common faults etc.... cheers and look forward to hearing from you all. stu..

A good choice I would say. But get prepared to get a lot of replies saying the opposite. A lot of the Freelander faults are less common on the later TD4s. Take a read through the forum and you will see what to look out for.

I took a gamble on mine 6 months ago at auction its an 03 TD4 5 door Kalahari Auto and was a finance repossession and cost me £2800 and I have put 6000+ miles on it since and I love it, plus I get an average 34mpg. Its the same as any modern car they all have faults, I was going to buy a Ford Mondeo, then found a Ford forum and it put me right off due to the amount of problems with them.

So I bought a Freelander instead

Its seems most people only come here when they have a problem, like the Ford forum probably. If you look after your vehicle and service it well I think you will be very happy.

The price of tyres for mine frightened the life out of me as I think mine are 225 x 55 x 17 ones and not cheap. This week one of the front tyres went flat with a slow puncture and it turned out to be irreparable as it was a slit on the sidewall, swopped that with the spare as the tread was the same depth luckily and prepared to dig deep in my pockets for the £120+ I thought I was going to spend on one tyre. The guy then said do you only want a budget make for the spare and I said I dont think you will get one he came back to me with £60 + the vat ok mate I could have snatched his hand off for a set of 5 but the others all have over 7mm of tread left. Look like nice tyres as well for the money, thats the service you get from a small country garage who values your business.

Take your time buying the right TD4 and enjoy it!!

The thing you need to ask your self is are you buying a 4x4 with the intention of using it off road?
We run both a td4 (the wifes) and a defender. Whilst we have taken the hippo off road and it can be surprising where it can go, the lack of a low box and ground clearance leads to problems. As stated the later TD4s are less prone to problems. If may want to think about a disco
