I have my freelander about 2 weeks and its giving trouble.

It’s a 2003 TD4. I'm looking for advise on what to do.

The car seems to have an intermittent starting problem. It started fine this morning on the way to work. As I was driving seemed to loose power. I made it to work and when I tried it again the engine is cranking but not catching on .

Then this evening I tried it again and all was good. When I got home again the same problem. Left it sit again for 15 minutes and it started again.

Where do I look first as a likely cause?

Thanks

could either be injectors leaking by (do injector leak off test to prove) or a faulty cam position sensor.

if it's more problematic cold, then likely to be injectors
if it's more problematic hot, then likely to be cam position sensor

(bit of a generalisation, and assumes glow plugs etc are all ok. there are other causes, but these seem to be the most common/likely)

good luck

The power loss would be fuel pump.

Next time it fails to start do the following :

1 . Insert the ignition key and turn on the ignition, but do not start the engine up. You should hear the fuel pump working. When the pump stops, or after about 20 seconds turn the ignition off.

2. Repeat 5 or more times. This builds up pressure in the fuel line.

3. Try and start the car. If it starts, you probably have a failled In tank fuel pump and a failling under bonnent one.

Thanks for the responses lads.

Turned out to be the fuel pump according to the breakdown assist guy.

Is there one or two fuel pumps in the freelander ?

Is there anywhere that sell the pump cheap ? as I imagine they wont be cheap:(

Most 2003 models have the single low pressure fuel pump mounted behind the rear drivers side wheelarch beside the filter.
Earlier cars had two lift pumps, one in the tank & the other underbonnet.
If your fuel filter is underbonnet you've got the older setup. If not you've got the later setup.
Check ebay for "td4 fuel pump", I bought an original brand new Landrover unit for mine as a spare for around £50.

Hi
The cam sensor is to give your engine management info for start up. Once started it then relies on other sensors around your engine to keep it going.

Sweet .. I just wanted to rule out the cam sensor as the car was losing power as well as poor starting.
