Hi there - I know absolutely nothing about how cars work, so will try to explain as concisely as I can my problem.

I have a 2001 Freelander 1.8 ES and had it for nigh on 3 years - and has been good as gold.

However driving home earlier, just nearly home and hear a very load rattling (metal on metal) noise - which sounds like it is coming from under the handbrake console area. Slowly get it home and take a peek under the car - can see a long silver coloured thing that runs the length of the car (I am assuming it is the drive shaft???) and there is a black circle that seems to have been knocked out of covering something centrally on the shaft thing hanging loose (but still hanging around the shaft).

Can anyone shed any light on what this is - and how much of a job it could be to repair.

Apologies for not having a clue what anything is under the car, but I do really like my Freelander!

Many thanks for any assistance,

Dean

Hi, type in 'VCU damper loose' in search box and click search. Lots of info and pics.

The black circle is probably the rubber section of the VCU damper. It's supposed to help elimiate vibration. The outer section is a heavy rubber so you can probably safely cut it off. This will sought the problem temporarily. If you then have no decernable vibration you don't need to worry about replacing the damper.

Cheers
