Freelander problems

Hi thanks for the advice. Sorry if this has been covered or iv posted in the wrong section. I own an 02 freelander td4. When i start it up i get a whining sound to the rear and white smoke. Also the revs keep dropping and eventually it will stall, that's whilst stationary. When driving it will go well in stages but then lose power i can suddenly go from 70 to having my foot down and doing 20, the power is really intermittent. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance

Try leaving the missus at home and see if the whining stops.

Not sure why this showed as an alert as I logged in as I don't have much interest in Freelanders.

White smoke is more worrying. Is it using a lot of oil?

white smoke can be two reasons 1. over fueling probably injector or 2. turbo

No doesn't seem to use much oil and smoke goes when driving

i think the 02 has an in-tank electric low pressure fuel pump
could be that making the noise ..
later vehicles have the l.p. pump under the rear arch
if they get noisy .. often means they're failing / worn out
