Just curious for those that have owned either version or even both.

Out of the original td4 and the facelift td4 other than the looks is one much better than the other ? The reason I ask is that I might be looking at an early diesel and wouldn't want to spend any more than 4k but if I could spend less then even better. It won't get much use, probably 4-5k per year unless I like it lots. 4k is right at the bottom end of the fl market but do they make the better choice, I prefer the looks of the exterior and the interior but the early versions seem like 3k would get you something slightly better.

Thanks

other than exterior and exterior ergonomic's the mechanical working's are exactly the same from 1998-2006.... In the td4 the early 2.0l diesel was replaced in 2000 (I believe) by the m47 BMW engine which in my opinion is a much better choice, but people will disagree I'm sure! do your research on drive train issues ie IRD,VCU and differentials. look for substantial service history. to sum up if you buy an older well looked after model it will drive exactly the same as a newer facelifted version. ;)

Ta, quite a number of Freelanders have very few owners, I've seen a number of 1 owner cars with full history on autotrader. There is one locally a 02 car that's just had a new clutch and dmf and prop bearings, dad has a freelander sport since 2004 and its been as good as gold.

The TD4 is the best engine all round, but the 2.0 Rover diesel is more reliable and cheap to maintain but isn't as refined or powerful as the TD4. But th TD4 is still a very reliable engine in the grand scheme of things :).

BMW diesel engines in LR always was a pain.. In FL, in P38 Range Rover , in BMW also ;) . Those are good when all its OK, when some problems are occurred, you need a bank loan to make it running again :p (4ex. Injectors fail after around 150-160.000 Km)

I got MY'00 L-Series from five years... it have 214.000 Km on clock and I just change an oil pump. This only huge job with engine. Rest of it was normal maintenance (oil, belts, glow plugs, some small leaks). Also it still have Diff and IRD from manufacturer running with no problems :) 3 yrs ago VCU was changed for new one after 187.000 Km.

i used to have a TD4 years ago but now i have a L series diesels

the L series isnt as nippy and the TD4 but i have found it so much better engine wise and reading through all the threads before i bought mine i went for the earlier model as the engine is a little more reliable if serviced regularly

TD4 was introduced in 2001 and the l series can have good upgrades

from what i have read you can upgrade to the SDI injectors and pump today i believe i have found a tuning box but if not a Remap

i have fitted a cone filter, deleted the EGR and decatted not made much difference those mods but it has made the car rev so much more freely the mods i listed above are on my todo list if the thing stays on the road long enough as i had the money for some mods when the IRD decided it wanted a hole in it and the VCU breaking lol

What can be done to give the l series a bit more umph, and when was the td4 introduced ?

There is loads that can be done to the L series to up the power. The MG forums are the places to check to get that info. I've seen the L series make over 150 bhp and best part of 300Ftlb of torque !!

I'm not a diesel fan but I'd have a tuned L series if it had all the toys/ heated leather and stuff. Sadly they only ever come in basic trim :(

this is true.. about the trim but when i bought mine i was lucky enough to have the previous owner had already fitted a leather interior

i have since then fitted the armrest center console extra lights to the front and fitted roof rails

one job for summer tho is to wire in a new system to get my heated seats working but i have until winter to do this

I wish there was a thanks button :)

Power, around 125/150 would be nice, still my current car is around 300 with the remap (Leon cupra) and I hate diesels, but something's need to be derv powered. I'm happy to retro fit the fl front and the interior, I guess I could also consider things like the rav4 or crv but I feel that if your going for a 4x4 then at least have one that has a bit of capability even if I never use it.

I'm looking at getting something like a panda twin air or fiesta size car for the daily hack the freelander for the bikes and then we have a tt for some sun :)
