It sounds as if it's the immobiliser not recognising your key.

Check the fuses under bonnet and in the passenger fuse box as you may have blown something when you sparked the electrics when fitting the starter

Just checked the 36 fuses in the car drivers side, checked the ones in the engine bay right hand side with the relays. When you say passenger fuse box is there more

If the wire from battery to starter terminal didn't turn the engine over then you have a problem with power supply to or from the starter....

Make sure the battery terminals are secure.
Try the key...

Connect a jump lead from the negative battery terminal to a metal part of the engine.
Try the key..

Now with the jump lead still connected try the wire to the starter trick again.....

Hopefully you will have some form of life with one of these things.....

Let us know how you get on and what if any noises occur or if any thing else happens.

Evening, tonight managed to get hold of new earth lead so replaced from engine to body to battery. Took new starter off and battery drill wire brushed every mating face and terminal from starter all the way back. I now have a engine that turns over a treat but will not start. Any one have any ideas

We'll just swapped relay in engine bay (one with fuel pump sign) for hill decent one and she fired up yee har . Now i have amber hill decent and the amber tc light on the dash. And also not got any brake lights or reversing lights but at lease it starts and I can move it out the way. Many many thanks for all the help and pointers. Hoping the brake pedal switch is stuck down and the reverse bulb blown but that's a job for the weekend. If anyone needs and starter motor on a td4 removed or refitted I think I could do it in record breaking time . Once again many many thanks for all your help
