Freelander leaking oil?!

what colour is the oil dripping down the sump?
I though my sump gasket was leaking at one point but the oil was clean which meant it had to be either diesel or gear box/ird fluid......never got to the bottom of it, its' always done it, at some point i'll check the driveshaft seal but the amount it loses is very minimal and when checking gearbox and ird levels at services they never really need to be topped up.
I did have to change my high pressure fuel pump as this was leaking in cold weather from the top piston cap, i still have the slight oil drip after this.

It looks dark black oil, just the same as the oil seen from checking the dipstick level hance my conclusion being engine oil, the garage could not take the whole cover off underneath but from what they could briefly see pointed towards sump gasket, that the reason I asked if it is from there will changing the filter have a dramatic effect to the point where it will make it stop leaking even if from the sump gasket or is it that once it's start to leak there no other option but to replace?...

Right you are, if it's black then it does point to you needing to change the gasket unless it's still tracking down from the top of the engine.

No visible sign from looking at the top and side of the engine from the top, only signs of a leak is from bellow, and the left hand side of the engine. Whats the average labour involved in a sump gasket change anyway? Still find it hard to believe it could leak after a new gasket was fitted after the piston ring change, are garages that S**t or is there still signs of pressure that is slowly building up again due to non replacement of filter, guess will have to wait and see...
