Hi there guys,I have a Freelander SE 2004 and the ignition key has always been a little tempremantal however a few days ago i went to put the key into the barrel and it would not turn.
After a few minutes manipulation it finally turned and stared.
Now over the last few days the key will go in and now will not turn inside the barrel.
Will this be the barrel worn or the key?
Also could it be the ignition switch rather than the barrel.
Finally i have seen an ignition barrel and key for a 2004 Freelander HSE and was wondering would this fit my model?
I know a lot of questions but i litterally have no clue about this.

It could be the lock or the key. Mine has done the same thing a couple of times over the last couple of years. When mine last did it, I turned the key over and it worked fine.

if you swap the key/barrel then you either have to have 2 keys or get the complete set, door, boot and fuel cap. when i removed my ignition barrel i used a dremmel to slot the 2 "headless" screws to use a screwdriver, gave them a little help with a hammer and punch and then they unscrewed no problem.

Thanks guys,I have tried both the origional key and the spare key and both will go in the barrel but will not turn, even turned both keys over and tried them that way.
There is a lot of play from the barrel and also both the keys feels very loose when slotted into the ignition barrel.
I don’t mind if the barrel needs replacing (bit of a pain) just wondering if the one i have seen for for sale with keys online (Out of a 2004 Freelander HSE model) will fit my 2004 SE model or do i need the barrel from the exact same model as mine.

There are several Landy scrappers about with all Freelander locks and keys, if you have trouble getting the lot, google JJ Car Parts. Have nothing to do with him, bought from him several times, sure he has had one or two in recently, will post stuff, and seems decent enough, worth ringing him.

Unless you are happy with separate IGN key. you could spray the body pink so you don't shove the door key in the IGN

All the locks are the same design. So you can get them from any 2001 onwards Freelander.
It's best to get all the locks and fuel cap from the same vehicle though, or you'll need to carry two keys to get open everything.

Also don't forget to swap the original transpoder over to the replacement key.;)

Thanks again guys, got a local Land Rover lock expert to give me a quote to replace the barrel.
I am preparing myself for a shock just in case.
I will also ask if he would be prepared to replace the barrel with a second hand one i can buy as it might be cheaper than if he supplies the part aswell as fit.
