Series are more fun to drive than Defenders, Defenders have all the same faults without the character.

Have a google for "Green Oval" and download the cd's for the freelander - includes all manuals and repair and maintenance info your likely to want.
You will then be able to identify your exhaust system components and find out about the VCU and transmission system.
There have been threads on here (many) about the hill descent switch problems and VCU - use the :search: then ask again.
