Hi,
Thought I would throw this out to the community before getting under it and looking for the cause,
basically a freehand 1.8 petrol has stood for a while every couple of months I give the engine a run just to keep it lubricated, well this time the brakes were stuck on so I thought I would try rocking it backwards and forwards but she was solid, it wasn't going to move so i just switched the engine off and thought I will free the brakes of later in the week, the next morning we could a big oil slick on the drive, my first thought it was engine oil but when i was cleaning it up it was evident it was gear oil.
Anyone come across this before?
I will post my findings once i have found the cause.

What makes you think its from the gearbox?

It was probably oil that's been dripping onto the undertray since its been laid up and collecting there. Rocking the car has sloshed it onto your drive - maybe from the gearbox side of the tray - but that doesn't mean it was dripping on that side.

As above. You probably finished of an already close to failure IRD, but that's a pure guess. You need to get underneath to investigate and take a camera to post some pics on ere ;)

It obviously sounds like something has failed since the last time it was started. The brakes are siezed so the gearbox/IRD haven't really been turned much. It is posible as Nodge says that if the bearings in the IRD pinion were shot the crown/pinion gears could have slipped and cracked the IRD case - but did you hear it go? It will be obvious because it will be cracked severely.

I wouldn't mind betting its still engine oil - or maybe a fuel leak mixing with oil around the engine.
