Hi I m new here
Hope you can help
I have a 06 frelander which was running fine but I was driving along at about 45 mph
There was a high pitch squeal which lasted for about5 seconds
Then it started to smoke white/ light grey smoke so I pulled over switched off checked for obvious problem oil and water ok so I decided to limp the 1 mile home if I could it was still smoking and started to rattle when I got home I switched it off checked around oil and water still ok but it seems to have locked up as the starter won’t turn it over
Any help would be much appreciated thanks

Diesel or petrol?

Td4 diesel

If it's a Freelander 1, then it's not unheard of for the crankshaft to break on No1 crank pin. Try rotating the crankshaft pulley back and forth with a spanner on the nut, and see if it feels like it's connected to the rest of the crankshaft, or not, as the case may be.

Has something driven by the aux belt seized, you never said where the smoke was coming from. It could account for the squealing, and the smoke, and the hot belt could have melted to the pulley/s.
Well it makes sense to me.

That's some nice logic applied there. ;)

A similar squealing noise accompanied by steam and overheating from my Vauxhall Zafira was caused by the water pump seizing. Maybe it's the alternator has seized and now the battery is dead.
