Looks like im back! recently when I start my freelander theres a ticking noise which is in sync with the idling speed, as I accelerate the ticking noise speeds up in sync with the speed e.g the ticking gets faster if I speed up and ticking gets slower if I slow down!

Extremely annoying, when the problem first started it would go away after a while but is now a permenent feature!

Cheers in advanced if anyone gets back to me!

Mike

he he could'nt resist sorry mate.... :p
i had an issue with my defender slight ticking was driving me even more insane than i am already

The faster i went the faster the ticking noise was..... turned out to be a screw in the tyre...

Sounds like somethings not getting the oil it requires hence the ticking, but hay i know nothing about g...... freelanders...
Thats prob why when it first started it went away... ticking for a while then it got some of the oil it req..... but like a say i know nothing...
Good luck with that sure someone will be able to help.... :D:D:D

I can honestly say im hopeless with cars, i know where the belts are but what am I looking for looks normal although one cog looks like its abit shakey only a little bit though, dunno if its linked but when I take the petrol cap off a gust of pressurised air/fumes or whatever comes out because the noise sounds like its coming from the injectors? probs not linked but thought id say anyway

to be honest I can live with the annoying noise just wanted to know really if its alright to just leave it - dont fancy paying for any more work on the car considering just had tax, mot and new exhaust grr

Sounds like it might be a noisy hydraulic tappet. Try some Wynns tappet cleaner into the oil then drain and refill with fresh oil and a filter and hopefully that will sort it.

thanks mate only had oil changed a couple of months ago and this has only just started happening does sounds like its coming from the injector part fast ticking noise, very annoying lol

Hi Mtonks,
That is exactly happening with mine.
In March, I purchased a 2nd hand Freelander with 108,000Ks on the odometer (5spd,5 dr, petrol, 2000 make) with a regular log book service history. I had the timing belt/water pump changed recently as its recommended at 100K. The car is in pristine condition and i keep it garaged during the week as i cycle to work and only really use it on weekends.
Anyways, about 2 weeks ago, I get that same ticking sound when i jump into my Freelander on the Saturday, provided it has been sitting in the garage for the previous 5 days. Interestingly, I go some extra managerial or technical work for community radio on the weekends so I drive from Colyton to Padstow sometimes (about 1 hour, NSW, Australia), I notice that the noise will be there when i take off with the car on Saturday, but it will only last for about 15 to 20 minutes, and even less than that provided I get up past 90KM speed wise. It so far seems consistent that something isn't getting oil properly. hmmmmmmmmmm... any thoughts?

Interesting, well I went out in it today just to the petrol station was ticking at first then after about 10 mins just stopped and was working absoloutley fine!

Aslong as nothings getting damaged I dont mind the sound just dont want the head gasket to be under any strain or anything, I only had the oil changed a bit back and oil levels seem fine I went on youtube and listened to cars with noisy tappets and I think its possiblt that!

Reckon Mantamad is on the money with this one - noisy hydraulic tappet.
Try some wynns or similar additive or just another type of oil. Had the same on my K16 series and a change of oil (make that is) and it ain't come back yet.
If the engine has done some ;) miles then when left for a few days and started it is normal for the tappets to be noisey until they refill with oil as the engine runs. :):):)
