Freelander engine same as anything else???

Hi, freelander 1.8 16v engine has blown. I have been told that the engine from a 1.8 16v MGF will fit, is this true? what will I need to change over from the freelander engine, ie sump? inlet? ect

I have an idea that a rover 75 /MG Zs is the same bhp & torque as a freeloader try looking it up on Wikipedia or you could try sticking a L series diesel in it if you fancy a bit of spannering

I don't want to change the type of engine, I just want to replace it with another 1.8 16v. It seems to be easier to get hold of an MGF engine than a Freelander one, hence my question.
There are lots of people selling MGF engines and advertising them as Freelander engines, but I don't want to get stung!

how bad is your engine? is it repairable ?
the trouble with second hand motors is you never know what sort of lead footed numpty has been thrashing it especialy a MGF sports car ,
you need to get a good warrenty not sold as seen!
get it fitted and then get sombody to check it over
Rover 75s are a old mans car ..same engine but less likley to have been wellied.

What do you mean by blown?

swap it with one from the same year, dizzy cap/non-dizzy cap.

MEMS 1.9, pre late 2001 dizzy cap
MEMS 3 post late 2001 coil packs
MEMS 2J pre late 2001 VVC engines only, later VVC engines have MEMS 3

All MEMS 3 are re-mappable,

I would take one with warranty, unless you know what to check, otherwise you could be buying a load of auld scrap
£300-500 for a decent 1.8

I have been offered a MGF 1.8 16v engine with only 30'000 miles. Comes with a 60 Day warranty as well for £300. All I need to know is will it definitely fit.

k series injuns went in loads of stuff, mgf's, rover 75s, think the lotus got one an all

So, I'm right in thinking there a common engine between a few cars.

rover bulit a shed load of cars but not many injuns.The v8 went in loads of different things as well.

Also, if the motor I buy has a dizzy, and my car has a coil pack can I get this to work?

yup its the same engine - but one has to ask the question - Why?

Why would you want to replace a known badly designed engine with another one of the same type?

You might like to consider the Rover 220T series engine - a much more robust lump, when fitted with the Klinger Head gasket, and needing only minor modification to fit.

my mum in-law had a low milage bout 35k-40k '53 plate Rover ZS trophy (1.8 K-series) had it 4 or 5 weeks had heating probs ........oh low and behold the head gasket was away and this car sat most of its life in a drive and had older owners shopping run so it wasnt a boy racer mobile, and promptly traded it in!!!!!

MGF has VVT or VVC or whatever its called. Variable valve timing anyway. You'll need to fit the standard freelander stuff to it for it to work as the ecu's will be different too, the freelander ecu wont work with VVC
