Hi all,
New to this site but I am hoping it will be usefull. Got a freelander TD4 on a Y plate. When I start it first thing in the morning it always starts, and if I am at work say and go to start at the end of the day it always starts. But after a journey if I leave it half an hour then go to start it , it wont start. Mind you this does not happen every time. It happened this morning in Tescos car park, read the paper for half an hour then tried it again and started.Any help please.
I have seen this problem mentioned in other threads, but have not seen an answer to this problem. Look forward to hearing from any one who can help.

Cheers Mike.

Hi all,
Its me again. After reading through many threads on this site I see that the problem I have is quite common. I will try the cam sensor first and see what happens from their. What a great site. If I can solve the problem through this site I would imagine hundreds of ££,s saved.

Other causes of poor hot starting are injector leakback and intank fuel pump failiure.
You can test for injector leakback quite easily.
The details are on my website here:

75ZT HOME (scroll down a bit to injector issues)

Its quite possible that a Y reg Td4 will need the injectors servicing which costs from about £75 each.

Lynx Diesels - Diesel Fuel Injection Specialist in Wokingham are worth speaking to.

Almost definately cam sensor. The new ones from BMW are modified although LR say they are not! The difference is the new sensor is about 12mm diameter, the original 10mm. Its a doddle to change, remove the sound cover on top the engine and the sensor is just to the left of injector 1. Remove the connector and single screw and pull out - the replacement sensor comes with a new o-ring, apply a little oil from the dip-stick to ease fitting.
Buy the sensor from BMW as its significantly cheaper - the part number is printed on the side of the sensor.

I will report back next week and let you know. Thanx lads for all the help. A small donation is needed I feel . Great site for any landrover owner.
Cheers Lads , Mike.

P.S New sensor didnt come with O, ring. Although I did ask.

Another satisfied customer...

Sometimes I wish something would go wrong with my TD4, just so you guys could tell me how to fix it!

Cheers

Hi all,
Got new cam sensor today from BMW. Part No. BMW 2 249 320F. Price £65 including the vat.

Our Facelift 55 plate Freelander TD4 also developed this starting problem; it would start, run for a few seconds at a very slow barely running tick-over (with no throttle response), and then die/stall. Seems to be only happen when starting warm and becoming increasingly more often of late.

I discovered that holding the ignition key in the crank position, until the engine would rev, was a way around the inability to re-start rather than keep on trying.

I have just ordered a replacement cam sensor (BMW part - 7 794 646) which I collect tomorrow. The car already had the BMW cam sensor on it, and this is where I got my part number from.

The BMW part was £96.66 incl.VAT and I'm told includes the 'O-ring'

As reference I called Landrover parts and found the Landrover part (think the guy said its number was 8510217 ?) cost £121.67 incl.VAT plus the 'O-ring' at a mere £1.33. Think I also found the (LR?) part on-line for £114 incl.VAT. BMW seems to be the way to go.

Hopefully once fitted the problems will be resolved. Thanks all for documenting your troubles and helping me out and I'll report back on the results.

Those lights are the "3 Amigos" - means you have an issue somewhere in the ABS related systems - best to get the diagnostic codes read as it will tell you what's wrong - eg ABS sensor, ABS pump etc.

What ever is causing them to be lit though is not stopping the car from starting - that will be a different fault.

When you say it "won't start" - you'll need to provide more info - like does the engine turn over and not fire or will it not even turn over, any signs of poor starting or other problems leading up to it.
