Hi All, here I am again suffering tremendously since I purchased a Freelander 1.8 ES. This time, apart from Clutch, Gear, Sunroof and Transmission seals problems (only an 02 with 30,000 miles !! ) I noted that the expansion tank was empty, I filled the tank using the described process in the Manual ie. 50% H20 and 50% coolant. Within three hours the level began to drop to less than full, I filled the tank up once again to full mark - and parked for the night. Next day I went pale !! it was empty again - day before no signs of overheating or engine stress.. and no obvious leaks ... coolant is bright pink and so signs anywhere... question is where does this water go? why no overheating signs???? is the headgasket on the way out or is it out !! now.... please help help again... anybody

obvious things first - check for leaks.
once yu are POSITIVE they are no hoses split etc.
check your dipstick to see if the oil is creamy or white - this is indicative of emulsified oil - ie oil and water mix
if none of the former show any problems - top header tank up and run engine.
if it pushes coolant out then it is being pressurised - most likely by hgf.
hgf does NOT - repeat NOT - always cause temp to rise above normal, because temp is not measured in engine!
if yu are in the slightest wary - get your local garage to perform a "sniffer" test - basically this checks the water for combustion gases. although if the engine is sucking the water IN to the engine it wont necessarily show.
If none of the above show problems then replace the water top up cap. better still replace the tank with the later one with water level sensor. (see other fred)

good luck!

Thanks for the tips, checked for obvious leaks and re-filled the expansion tank up to the Max mark (as before) then started the engine - I noted that as the Expansion tank builds up pressure, from the overflow pipe located just below the cap a rush of coolant returns to the tank. Apart from that I once again checked for water leaks and noted by looking from the top of the engine, near the generator side of the engine bottom engine protection plate, some rusty reddish water ( not rain or any other source) all other bits dry, just this estrange dribble of water present at the bottom, could not work out if it was running water i.e. with a flow from a source somewhere..... this is very serious I gather because I filled the tank yesterday twice !! as it was empty for some reason, in fact the car was dry... no signs of sludge (oil cap or dip stick) so I cannot work out what else..... no rise in temperature at all. I am in touch with the finance company as we share ownership of the vehicle 50 - 50 and I just bought it from a Company named " car Giant " 114 checks on all vehicles.... doubtful .anyhow I am at a loss here, I am due to travel to Sheffield tomorrow 5th Mar 07 and I am not sure if the car would take me ...

for wot its worth. dont drive it - call trading standards - call the finance co - call Rets - call watchdog - get shot back to car giant!

it is not fit for purpose - get yo money back

Thank you for the tips and yes I have read all the bits on trading standard website .

I have written to Car Giant as from the 15th February - they demanded to be given the chance to put things right (obviously standard policy) which I did, the had to change
  • Breaks
  • Full clutch
  • Transfer Box seals
  • Flat Spare Tyre
  • Sunroof (complete assembly)
I cannot see how they consider 114 safety checks made on all their vehicles...

I managed to get some feedback from the finance company and they are currently investigating the matter however, not updated with this weekend's findings..... what what what a pity.. not a bad looking car, non Jap, I hate Japanese looking cars so in order to stick to my policy; after Car Giant refunds me (and they will... ) I shall buy an AUDI A4 - hopefully diesel.... and that is that.. back to VW (safe zone)

That is the end of my Land Rover Adventure.. I tried... but Land Rover failed me...and perhaps at the end of the day,,, Car Giant sold a bad vehicle, but after checking all related feedback on the Freelanders.... the faults I am experiencing are shared by 1000's here and aborad.... why cant Land Rover recall the damm vehicles a'n crush em all.............. after refunding of course.......

wud yu buy another lr from somewhere more reliable?

Ive had three Land Rovers over ten years. First was a Series III that I loved and threw loads of money at but was a bit far gone. Would have had the money to restore it now, ten years later, but you have to have "one that got away" don't you.

The other two are fantastic. Our TD4 has never - and I mean NEVER - missed a beat. And we'll never get rid of the Camel, so much fun and so much character.

wud yu buy any other car from Car Giant?

"Who?"

It sounds like one of those car supermarkets, or one of those Yes! Car Finance places. Basically they sell on ex-company cars bought for peanuts at auction. I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole.

Cheers

Blippie

I have always been wary of these so called car supermarkets. Good trade in prices perhaps but high prices and expensive finance. Theres only 1 place to buy a quality Landrover - Ebay! thats where I got mine.

Dont write off LRs because you chose the worst model. There are better and more reliable ones!

Got Rid Of The Freelander !!1 Now I Am The Proud Owner Of An Audi A4 Tdi 1.9 Saloon - Its A Dream....... Byeeeeeeeeeeeee Freelanderssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

So Spanish - tell us the story.....
did it go back to car giant, did yu just set fire to it or did yu sell it to some other poor tortured soul?
give us the low-down.

Dont blame the Hippoo. OK Yu got a dog, but yu were sold a dog!

Car Giant was given the chance to sort out all the problems with the vehicle, however, as I drove the Freelander, new faults appeared, faults that should have been picked up by the " 114 safety check” - as printed in the entire advertised blurb given to customers, even on their website. Some of the faults I found were related to vehicle safety for example below standard Break Pads....poorly... Transmission oil leaks, bad seals, horrid clutch ! and so on.. the list goes on. The car had to the taken back to the dealer under the "Pseudo Warranty" which is never mentioned to prospective buyers and try to sell extended warranty at a premium....little people know beacuse under consumer law, we are all entitled to a three month free warranty when buying a second hand car from a dealer, specially if the dealer enjoys the company of two large finance partners - by law within three months if any faults develop, these have to be dealt with by the car dealer. If these faults are not fixed or repaired properly (time scales applies at all times) or new faults begin to show (must be documented as they appear - photographs, receipts, dates) then we as consumers are entitled (Sales of goods act 1979) to a refund or to have the offending vehicle exchanged taking into account age of vehicle , amount paid and what is expected of it and of course when purchased and how long owned, obvioulsy within the three months after purchase. Additionally, if the vehicle is partly owned by a finance company (my case 50% of it) then we as consumers ADITIONALLY have the right to reject the purchase back to the finance company, “Joint Liability “section 75 consumer credit act 1974.
That's what did it - I exercised my rights, I spent hours reading consumer law books and of course I have always kept an objective mind - no shouting or swearing to the dealer. I guess now there is little wrong with the vehicle apart from the prospect of a blown head gasket as the signs are there now!! Constant empty Expansion tank and water leaks..... I took no chances... Well, it was short lived, a good experience while I owned the Freelander - I guess I was falling in love with it ...is so easy to handle, easy to park, holds well on roads, feel very safe in the cabin (simple but practical) SHAME ABOUT THE POOR ENGINE AND the rest.... I guess I will wait and find another excuse to buy a 4 X 4 not jap.... that’s for sure...
when that happens, you are all invited to fantastic Paella <<<<<<<<<

No Loss, full refund by the Dealer and Finance company re-scheduled the finance to the Vehicle - All happy including Car Giant :)
