Hi fokes

I've just brought a freelander, which over the past 4 years has had money thrown at it. It had a clutch done about 2.5 years ago 25k miles and it would seem it's gone again. I can select any gear with the engine running and without pressing the peddle and the car will not move. What part of the clutch has gone or is it the gearbox.

Cheers fokes

It's a td4 2001. No there is no grinding the gear lever moves like it's going in gear but I don't know if it is , and I don't even have to press the peddle. I've never drove a freelander before and she told me it has been get harder to get it in gear.

Ok thanks I will give that ago in the morning. Just a quick question why should this work by turn off the landy put it in gear then try to start it. Only asking as I'm a novice at this stuff.

Cheers steve

I presume because without using the clutch you can't get the car in gear when the engine's running - but you can when its not. You then turn the engine over and it'll be obvious if its then in gear!

Can you select every gear with engine running and clutch not depressed? I had this issue but could get 5th & reverse to drive, fault was broken selector inside gearbox.

Yeah I can select every gear without pressing the clutch. There is a little resistance in a couple of gears. And I've tried the car in gear and start car but still nothing. I put it in gear and looked under the car and the prop shaft is juddering. And you can hear a noise once you let the clutch out.

Steve

I don't know what the clutch should feel like. The prop is just juddering. Not moving.

I've given up now off to the scrap man next week.

Cheers for the info fokes.

Sounds to me like the splines have gone between the gearbox and IRD. Its just catching and trying to turn but slipping.

Sell it. The scrap man will give you nothing for it whereas you could get around £500 selling as a runner that doesn't drive;)

If you can get it to Portugal and have a few days holiday, I will give you 500 for it :)

(bit difficult when it doesn't engage gear !) ;)

I think the clutch actuation lever is stuck in the engaged position - - look and see if it moves ! - they have a habit of seizing.

I'll get my money back which is ok. I would stick with it and strip it down myself but there seems to be a lot under the car that can soon swallow a few hundred quid. Good engines tho but **** all round.
