Hi everyone
I have a freelander 2004 td4 .
Last night we went to go out , the separate fob unlocked the car as usual but the key would not turn at all in the lock , not a bit ..
We called the AA and he informed us we need a new barrel
I've spent the best part onpf the morning on the phone getting conflicting stories so Ive come to the experts !
Hunters Land Rover want £550 for the whole ' set ' 😤
I can source second hand ones he also told me .
Then someone else told me that the new barrel has to be programmed in so it works and I will need an auto electrician ..
Then another has told me that it doesn't as we have the separate square key fob and just need someone to fit it ..

Can anyone tell me which is true ?
And does anyone know someone reliable in the Southampton area that can do this work for us ..
Thank you !

I've just read that an auto locksmith could rebuild the original ignition lock so then we won't have to worry about programming keys etc
Another page said to put another ignition barrel in and swap the chip from the old key into the new key ?
Has anyone done this ?

£550 is main dealer, new parts, silly money. You may be able to find 2nd hand cheaper but being sure ecu will work could be a nightmare. If you can get a auto locksmith to rebuild lock then that has to be your best option and they will have the gear to reprogramm if needed.
As far as I know the key chip will have to match ignition chip which will have to match ecu settings.

The coil for the immobilser comes off the lock assembly and is transfered to the replacement lock, no need to reprogram it.

ur right as that's what I thought also, the key has no bearing on the car starting per sa , as only the transponder needs to match up with the key barrel coil and synced with the alarm ecu

so in theory u could get a second hand barrel and key from a breaker, swap over ur transponder to the other key and won't need any programming etc

that's if the auto electrician can't rebuild ur lock that is
