Freelander 2 TD4 XS Hesitant problems

Evening everybody, as stated in my introduction, me and the wife have purchased a beautiful Freelander 2 XS on a 60 plate. Only 108,000 miles on the clock, full service history. It was noticed that the oil change was due given it had done 6000 miles since the last change, and i heard the filters were a pig to get at, so i booked her in at my local garage to have a full service done.
Didnt need much doing to her as everything had been renewed at the last service, but oil and all filters changed and two new shockers put on.
A few days after the service she started juddering and like a kind of misfire when pulling away and sometimes just when driving normal, you can feel a bit of misfire and a judder which is gradualy getting worse.
I took it back to the used car dealer where i bought her from, it was plugged in showing no faults, engine management light not illuminated and it drove perfect when they were testing her. i was told to take it back if the engine management light came on as they were unable to find the fault.
One thing i have noticed is that the eco stop start does not kick in, either,
Any assistance or where to look would be appreciated

Hi mobey.
The service you had taken out was it just the oil & air filter change, did you have the fuel filter changed? if yes it may have air in the system? if not that may need changing also check the sensor inline of the air filter as been securely clipped in, whom did the service was it a Landrover dealer? or an independent garage, also check if the stop/start as been turned off?
 
The service was oil filter fuel filter air filter pollen filter, ive bought another fuel filter just in case this filter is faulty, how do i check to see if there is air in the system and how do you bleed the system ?
It was done by a garage not a Land Rover Dealer by a proper old hand mechanic
 
I would ask the mechanic to take another look at the fuel filter, making sure the fuel is drawn through with a pump so the filter is full before starting the car,
 
Yes had a word with him today he is gonna look at it for me on Wednesday, he is a good old boy and he has land Rovers himself including a Freelander 2,
 
Freelander went in today, it ran perfect taking it to the garage, the mechanic took itout for a run and gave it a good test, ran perfect for him. Plugged it in no faults , all sensors turbo hoses and fuel filter checked, nothing untoward. He told me that it may be the four wheel drive system that is sticking, so he told me if it starts again to stop the car let it roll back slightly, change from normal to Grass and Gravel mode to see if the gearbox is sticking.
Went back out to it and straight away the hesitation and jerking started as i slowly pulled away. i tried the changing from normal to grass and gravel mode then driving a few yards but stil that hesitation and jerking was still there.
What should i be looking at next?
 
Trying another mechanic:).
Not sure about the bit about the 4wd system 'sticking' and letting the car roll back?.
F2 drive modes are electronic controls and not likely to be affected by rolling the car back :rolleyes:.
 
well ive had it back to the dealer i bought it from, not a Land Rover dealer i might add, they couldn't find anything wrong with it nothing showing up when its plugged in, and also my other mechanic who said the same thing.
Personally im thinking it could be fuel pump as it only does it when ive come to a standstill and then go to pull away, maybe pump not keeping up with the demand for fuel
 
An update on this, the mechanic has now experienced the hesitation as i left the car with him for a few days. No fault codes coming up, however on live data it is showing thatthe accelaration curve is not a nice smooth curve, its stepped. So he thinks it is the throttle pedal potentiometer thats causing it.
 
Well bought a new pedal assembly that made no difference,, was told to try Crankshaft Position Sensor, still no difference. . So its been back to the place i bought it from and they have told me they have taken it to an auto electrician
 
Just an update on this guys, i took the Freelander back to where we bought it and i told him to sort it. I told him what i had renewed on her and that he can keep it as long as he needs to sort it. So we left it with him, Two weeks later we are informed the vehicle has been with an auto electrician and they have found the fault and rectified it, however they wanted to kep the Freelander for a couple of days of testing to make sure it was right. meanwhile im rushed into hospital with a hernia, so wife cant visit and only has the Discovery 2 to drive about in which she hates ( too heavy for her to drive).
Once out of hospital i contacted the garage to see how the Freelander was doing, only to be told sorry the fault has returned and we have no idea what to look at next. The garage told me they would extend the warranty, to which i said thats not worth the paper it is written on and so i went to get the Freelander back.
So this led me to more research on the web, the next thing was to try the fuel filler cap, may be a blocked breather, tried it without the fuel cap on still the same.

So what was next i thought, so i ordered a new mass air flow sensor, swapped that over and wow no more hesitation. All that and it was that bloomin sensor

Apparently faulty MAFsensors dont show up on code readers, how true that is i do not know

It's actually pretty accurate. As long as the MAF is still returning some signal, then the ECU doesn't flag a fault. It appears that the crank position sensor doesn't return a fault code either.
 
Well at least i know what to look for next time, ive ordered a spare MAF sensor just on the off chance, It was getting to the point of selling her on but now its sorted she is a beauty to drive.
