Hello,

I have a 2008 Freelander 2. I would be grateful for some advice on a shudder problem (the car, not me) please?

It happens in any gear, on flat or incline. Not linked to turning. Not linked to changing gear. Always when I am 'cruising' at any speed. The car drives smoothly, then suddenly shudders once only. The car is doing a sharp jerk for a split second, only one jerk, as if it loses power, then continues to drive normally.

I thought it was linked to a warm engine - ie - after about 40 mins of driving it starts, but occasionally it started happening earlier. Yesterday, I drove for 40 mins with no shuddering, then it happened twice during the remaining 15 min journey. I stopped for an hour, then re-started the journey home. In 50 mins, the car shuddered more than 20 times during the total journey - only one jerk on each occasion.

This problem started a few weeks ago. Nothing showed up when it was plugged in for diagnostics two weeks ago. Mechanic suggested we change the crank shaft censor, which was done. The car then went to a body shop for a week (because someone parked on it) and was not driven during that week. I got it back the day before yesterday, when it was delivered to my door (a 40 min approx journey). I then drove it yesterday and had the problem reoccur as described above - ie - despite the crank shaft censor change, the problem is still there.

Could anyone offer any advice please? I have to drive to Cornwall to collect my son on Wednesday and am worried. I will see if my local garage can do a diagnostic again tomorrow, but time is tight.

Thank you very much for your time.

Would you describe is as a momentary dropout?

Our Ford Kuga does a similar on the odd occasion. I think it's likely to be EGR related, possibly the throttle plate sticking.

I'm thinking that yours could well be the throttle momentarily sticking. This can would starve the engine of air, which cuts the power. The throttle plate is used in conjunction with the EGR and sticking is pretty common.
