Hi
I have a 2014 SD4 Freelander 2 and intend to change the cambelt (inc water pump and pulleys etc ) as its 7 years old now. I have purchased a Gates kit (KP25633XS).
The water pump gasket appears to be coated in a thin layer of black rubber (not sure what it actually is).
The question is, should this gasket be used just as it is or should RTV gasket sealant be used as well?
I wonder if anyone on here, who may even have already undertaken this job, be able to advise?

There is uncertainty on the Freel2.com forum as to whether applying RTV would be beneficial or indeed the opposite and be harmful to the coating on the gasket.
There were no instructions with the Gates kit. There is nothing helpful about this kit on the Gates website, and Gates customer services (base in Belgium) have not replied to my email.
The JLR service manual for the FL2 makes no mention of using sealant with the water pump gasket.

Gaskets are fitted as supplied. However when I did mine, I wasn't planning on doing it again, so gave the gasket a fine dusting with spray on blue Hylomar, just as a belt n braces approach. ;)

I presume it hasn't leaked then. How long ago did you do it ?

It was a year ago.
No leaking as far as I'm aware so far. I'm changing the head in the next few weeks, so I'll check the coolant pump for leaking then.

To wrap this up .
Someone on lrukforums.com kindly found this tech bulletin pdf for me.

"Both pumps to the left were supplied with a metal gasket with a rubber lining the interior perimeter. This type of gasket does not require any sealer"
I'd be inclined to agree, as the gasket is pre-coated with a thermo setting sealant.
However when I did mine, there was evidence of minor amount of coolant creeping past the gasket, which is why I gave it a fine dusting of Hylomar when I did mine. However it hadn't been touched for 11 years, so the coolant creeping could well have been down to the OE gasket at the end of its life.

Good to know it lasted 11 years. I doubt I'll still have the Freelander is another 11 years, but who knows; my old Disco 2 (2000 plate TD5 ) is still going strong it appears, according to on-line MOT data
