Freelander 2, cranks but won't start

Morning all.

After a year off the road due to furloughing and shielding, and on my first Saturday overtime in 2 years, my Freelander 2 broke down this morning.

It started, cut out, started again and then stopped completely blocking the street. It's an automatic, push button start, I keep my finger on the button and am met with the cranking over to start, however, it won't bite and continues the cranking whilst fingers on the button.

Thankfully, I found how to put it in neutral via the forum and was able to move it to a safe location.

A bit of history. I had similar issues early last year where the car would cut out, but restart eventually, I surmised it to be fuel and a full service was performed, the fuel filter apparently was disgusting. All has been OK since until now.

All help gratefully recieved.

What year and what engine?

I'm curious as to how a fuel filter can be described as "disgusting", as it's a completely sealed assembly, with no filter medium visible, unless it's been cut open, and a garage fitter wouldn't bother doing that.

Well the fuel filter itself if it's bosch or some other aftermarket has a clip which can be removed and then the top comes off for you to prefill and check.
Also, check all pipes see if there is diesel there. Both on left side are clear.
Could be airlocked somehow.

It's a TD4.
Is the fuel level around a ¼ of a tank?

It's likely to be the in tank transfer pump has failed, or its harness has a bad connection.
The fuel level sensor and pump are on one side of the tank, but the fuel supply line to the engine are on the other side of the tank. If the transfer pump isn't working, then the gauge will show about ¼ of a tank, but the side where the fuel is drawn to the engine will be dry, as no fuel is pumped to that side.

Put a couple of gallons of fuel in, and see if it starts, remembering it'll need to draw the fresh fuel to the engine.

That would have flagged a code.
