Hi everyone,

I am just about to join the Freelander club by buying
a 1999 2.0 diesel Di model, with 110 000 miles on board.

I read positive and negative comments about reliability
so i would appreciate comments from people who owned this model.

The car is in very good shape, no rust, was recently serviced,
had oil and filters changed. Has no service history.
It was converted to 2 wheel drive for fuel economy and
the seller says it was no issues at all.

The price is 1100 pounds.

Do you think its a good buy?
Also, this will be my first car and i know its not a Corsa but
its not a very big car.

It was probably converted to 2wd because its 4wd system is fooked, thats very common. Not too bad price if it's an otherwise clean and tidy car. Don't count on it ever being 4wd again without spending a bit on it.

Thanks!
I'm not too bothered about the 4 wheel drive and don't think i will covert it back.
I asked the seller about the reason of conversion and if had issues and he said it was
converted before he bought it.
He only has it for one year.
But if the 4wd system was fooked, it can affect other things in the future or it just means i wont have 4wd without converting back?

Why bother buying a 2 wheel drive freelander? The whole point of having a 4 wheel drive is to be able to use that option when necessary, otherwise you may as well buy a mondeo!

If it is 2WD then suspect IRD problems caused by knackered VCU..... walk away unless you want to spend a grand replacing them to make it a 4x4 again.

They catch fire quite regularly... the heater fan motor has a tendancy to seize when not in use in the summer and within minutes of switching on on the first cold day it overloads, wires burst into flames as there is no fuse and goes up in smoke.....

ask me how I know lol, interesting call to co-op insurance less than 30 minutes after taking out policy..... insurance assesor said he'd had several freebies do the same...

Cheers Steve
