Hi all,

My '03 Freelander (Td4) has a problem where it will only unlock with the keyfob. The key itself works perfectly to drop the tailgate glass, but won't lock or unlock the driver door when twisted. I have tried the spare set of keys, but that doesn't do anything either. Would anyone know the likely cause of this?

If key won't turn then either the barrel and key are different or the barrel was the right one for the key but the pawls have got stuck or damaged.
Have you tried lock lubricant which is a graphite based lube??

Has the key ever worked in the door?

We bought the car new, so as far as I remember, the keys definitely used to work, although they were never used regular. The doors and locks have never been changed, and both sets of keys are original.

The key itself turns freely in the lock, it just doesn’t do anything. Should I still give the lubricant a go, and would Wd-40 do instead?

The car was also reversed into by a lorry several years ago, no structural damage, but the bumper and a-bar had to be replaced. Is it possible that this shunt could have knocked something loose?

Many thanks!

OK so if the key turns then, as you say, sommat has come detached.
Have a look in the manual but I think there is a rod from the lock barrel to the lock.
Work out what it should operate and have a look behind door panel to see if it does!!

This is the drivers lock barrel.
Maybe the rod linking it to the lock has broken.

That’s great, I’ll have to give that a go.
It’ll be good to having a working key, because the fob can be very temperamental.

Many thanks!

To be honest, we've never had the need to. It's been a very reliable car, and touch wood it stays that way. The only issues we've ever had have been trivial, or the sunroof.
It's only really since my parents replaced it and passed it down to me that there has been any reason to fix up the bits and pieces that were broken.
