Freelander 1 TD4 strange sound when accelerating.

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone might have any suggestions as to the cause of some strange symptoms. I am not at all mechanically gifted so please forgive my somewhat amateur description of my problem.

I have a Freelander 1 TD4 which was running absolutely fine until mid-journey Wednesday afternoon. Basically the symptoms are that when I accelerate very gently or am maintaining say 30mph, everything is as normal; however, if I am accelerating slightly harder I am hearing a noise that appears to be coming from the drivers side of the engine that I can only describe as sounding like a high pressure spray in the wheel arch, or like the wheels on the drivers side are going through standing water?! I have also noticed white smoke from the exhaust when accelerating hard.

A couple of observations are:

- There is no apparent loss of performance.
- I am in the southwest and there have been a lot of flooded roads that I have driven down. Nothing that a 'normal' car wouldn't cope with though.
- A few miles before these symptoms started I put £15 diesel in.
- Slight smell of fuel from the engine at the end of a journey but this has always been the case.

Any ideas would be much appreciated. I just hope its not the head gasket!

Look for a split in the air intake hose the one on top at Right angle
Connected to the air sensor and inlet manifold cover.
The screw head wears them down

Had this on my TD4 which got worse then loss of power! As rhodie said
turned out to be a spilt in the air in take hose.

Teddywood - That's my father in law's tick! 4 times in 18 months in his Disco!!! Just checked the receipt and it's Diesel.

rhodie & Oval - I've just had a look and (again forgive my basic description) can't see any obvious split in the pipe but have only looked at the exposed end, will attempt to remove engine cover tomorrow to look at the other end. What I did notice is that the pipe fits to a moulded plastic pipe that sits into the bodywork above the wheel. This pipe was dislodged and had dropped down. I have lifted it and pushed it back into place but it is not firm and still moves.

Could this be the problem? Is the something on the other side of that piece of bodywork that its supposed to fit into that could have fallen away?

Went for a quick spin after relocating the plastic pipe but the sound remained.

The duct-pipe you're talking about being loose is the air-intake pipe - it carries air from under the wing to the plastic ducting eventually leading to the air-cleaner. It should of course be securely held in position with a large Jubilee type hose clip at each end.

The hoses that need to be inspected for splits or loose clips, allowing air to escape, are the other coloured turbo-hoses that you'll see in this thread.

Look especially at the back of the long one on the left as there is a screw-head which can wear a hole in the black rubber of the original. On the other side from the dip-stick.

The other place to look is the underside of the 90degree bend hose on the right of the pics

You are looking for splits that look like they have been made with a Stanley knife.

You might well need someone to rev the engine to around 2000rpm while you feel around the hoses as they might only leak when under pressure from the turbo.

This is a fairly common fault as rubber hoses become porous and split as they age - hence the replacement with longer lasting silicone ones.

The fact they look 'pretty' has nothing to do with it - honest.

You were correct, popped the engine cover and there was a lovely split in one of the hoses. Grabbed a replacement from the local dealer (twice the price of online but couldn't afford to wait for delivery) and all sorted!

You guys just saved me a fortune no doubt!!!!!
