hi all,

52 reg Freelander 1 td4. I have an intermittent power problem. Sometimes the car will suddenly lose acceleration power which seems to clear after about 2 mins if you floor it or lift off the accelerator. It tickets over fine but will not accelerate past 2,000 rpm. But if you pull over and rev it, it will rev normally past the 2k rpm mark.Weird.

I’ve replaced the crank case breather, air filter, and deleted the EGR valve using one of those kits. I’ve bought an expensive fuel system cleaner but it’s still there. And as I said intermittent.

Could it be the MAP sensor? Where is the map sensor of a td4 Mk1? Anyone have a picture?

Thanks in advance.

Andrew

MAP sensor is on the side of the manifold, which is best removed and cleaned out anyways, I would unplug the MAF senor a see if things improve, could be an injector so do a leak back test.

try clean the fuel rail sensor my 53 plate was doing same thing.i took it out and found a piece of oily sludge blocking the hole ,after good spray with cleaner she now runs better than ever.

I think I have found the MAP sensor. I don’t think my car has a MAF sensor. This is the extra little pipe on plastic inlet manifold. Mines early so does not have that sensor. Does that sound right to you?

On a TD4 the MAF sensor is under the air filter box lid. Remove it then you will see the sensor towards the back on the drivers side. Carefully disconnect the wiring plug. If there is no improvement it is not the MAF. If there is, it could be your problem

Your problem really does sound like a dodgy MAF. Running with it disconnected is okay for a while. The other similar issue I have had was a broken wire going to the turbo boost solenoid. To find that: underneath on at the back of the engine on the drivers side. Not too difficult to get to-have fun!

Thanks Moz. I’ve disconnected the MAP sensor for now. Well I think I have. If you are looking at the engine from the front it’s on the left under the plastic inlet manifold. I’ll see if that makes a difference. Do you think it will?

No. The MAF is under the air filter lid. You have to remove the 5 allen bolts on it and the intake hoses. Once you can see the air filter you will see the MAF on the left looking towards the rear of the car

Ok thanks Moz I understand the MAF sensor is in the air filter box. But I’ve not touched that yet. I’ve disconnected what I think is the MAP sensor. Which is near the front of the engine just under one of the rubber inlet hose. So far I have run the car with this unplugged for a day and a bit and the power fault has not happened. Will continue and I’ll also take a look at the MAF sensor next week.

If the MAP is disconnected, the ECU will implement a safe operating mode, which is far from correct. You need to reconnect it ASAP as the ECU needs to know the boost pressure, or it can't fuel correctly.

The engine works fine without a MAF connected, but not a MAP.

Ok thank you. Just to be sure, I’ve disconnected this sensor which I think is the map sensor and the car is running great! Looks like I need a new MAP sensor ???

That's the MAP plug, but I can't see how it's running great, when the ECU doesn't know how much boost is being delivered. It can't be fueling correctly in that condition. Unplug the MAF and reconnect the MAP.

I’ve connected the MAP and disconnected the MAF now. So far the car has not lost power. So will run for a few days like that and see what happens. Think I will replace MAP, MAF and high pressure fuel sensor anyway. Thanks for everyone’s help. Merry Xmas
