Perfect start to the weekend - rear ended as I was doing 60 on my way home!!

Can't fault the freebie - took a big wallop and only a scuff on the bumper, broken lens and bent towing electrics.

Have thrown an old lense in and ready to go again!!

Pics attached - folks think about it before you replace your 4x4's.

Regards,

Steve

the same thing happened to me on Shrewsbury by pass ,
Old boy in a Citroen C3 was tailgated by a white van -shunted into my tow bar ,plastic bumper holed, bonnet creased by the bottom of my spare wheel
poor old lad was distraught- dinged at both ends White van losing water from
busted rad Freelander untouched!

Is that speed camera lines on the floor?

Nick

Yep -I accelerated up to 60 then eased off - mazda man just carried on!!

I was surprised how tough they are - expected to see a dented rear door etc. As he was braking at the time his car did appear to slip underneath mine.

Regards,

Steve

Nice to know the gaylander stood up well in that shunt and you are ok. For peace of mind I would still get the car inspected for 'hidden' damage. Having whacked your towbar causing that much damage to the mazda, I would want to know there is no damage at the towbar mounting points etc.

The last thing you want is to find a damaged chassis/floorpan having not made a claim against him. Also bumpers these days are designed to spring back into shape and can any hide damage behind. It shouldn't cost anything to get it inspected, so you've got nothing to loose for some peace of mind.

Oh, and yes IAM don't seem to mean a lot these days unless it's the Institute of Advanced Morons.

 And this is what the rear end a Range Rover did to my old Toyota Avensis when my head was elsewhere.......................

Next stop was to buy a Freelander when it got back from the bodyshop!

Good nobody was hurt, I hope you drove forward and backed it up again just to be sure. That will teach him. Looks around several £k of damage to the Mazda.

You would be best to take the rear bumper off and look for any creases, is the rear quarter panel not creased above the wheel arch?

I would say the tow bar saved the day

I had a Jeep Cherokee hit the rear of the hippo a few years back. It was only about 10mph. I had my young child on board, was more concerned for her safety but all passengers were fine.

At first glance the FL looked untouched, second thoughts the rear door was crumpled and spare wheel sat at a strange angle.

Looking at the Cherokee, oh dear! bonnet stoved in, front grill mangled and coloured coded bumper cracked and flaking.

The rear wheel absorbed the impact :D

The door still functioned and the rear window worked, not bad considering the Cherokee weighs twice as much as a FL.

All sorted now with a new door.

FL only got 3 stars in the NCAP safety rating, still I'll take my chances

The three stars is cos they look at what the hippo does to others not just its protection of the occupants. I don't know how many stars a defender gets but The occupants tend to do better than what they hit/hits them.

Hey Steve,

Glad to see your Freelander did well! Hope you your OK.

Keep us posted on what happens!
