Hello guys, newbie introduction. Can anyone throw light on a sound resonating from my Freelander 1 td4 2002. I deisengaged the rear drive 2 years ago and just lately there is a sound similar to a piece of card in the rear wheel of a cycle- the sort of thing we did as kids. No bangs, no whines, just this sound of something touching a wheel , only when the car is in drive. Release the clutch take her out of gear and is disappears. Second gear is now difficult as you move down the gears. I would appreciate your advice.thanks.

Did you say you removed your rear prop 2 years ago. As the sound depressing the clutch disappears at the rear not the problem.
Yes, the rear prop assemble with viscous coupling was removed about 2 years ago. so this problem has started in the last month.taking her out of drive and it disappears!?

Rear wheels would coast and if there was anything the brake drums could be faulty or something scrapping inside the wheel area. But this would seem more from gearbox to the forward prop area.. If the front prop still attached try removing this first and see if this resolves the noise.

Not far away, south stafford. Used to live in one of the camp blocks of flats.
OOOOOoooooo which one. Trenchard Leyroyd where transits Gibson Johnson. Mine when I lived there was the first one when you came into the blocks after the car park on right. It was nickname the Suppliers Graveyard for which I was one as nobody remembers your name or your face as you had a stoop from being that depressed. 1981 to 1984 D.A.C. and 1 site and TSW.

Hello there, I am also new but have the same noise. Mine is related to the air conditioning compressor clutch assembly.
Which I replaced at the end of last summer after the clutch surfaces disintegrated.
Everything is fine until under load the same noise as you described comes back.
So either the replacement is also worn or the gap needs adjusting so the coil will pull in better, hence stopping the chatter.
I would suggest pulling the air on relay under the bonnet with green stripe nearest the windscreen to disable the air con take it for a drive.
If you still get the noise disregard all of the above.

Hello I have replaced the pulley
The one that came off didn’t look too bad.
With the newer pulley fitted( with new bolt) the noise is still there when the air conditioning is turned on.
I am now thinking the ac coil might have failed preventing the two clutch faces staying together.
Has anyone else had a similar problem please??
