hi all,

I would appreciate some thoughts.

I an being offered a freelander1 with the 1.8 engine. It has an issue and was hoping for thouhgts as to what it may be (I'm currently not jumping to conclusions!).

The symptoms I've been told are that the engine got hot / overheated then it struggled to start a couple of times (once immediately after and once a few days later) and now won't start.

To go from good to bad my thoughts are:
1: Just needs coolant replacement and will start again (won't start due to flat battery) or
2: Thermostat gone or
3: head gasket gone or
4: head gasket gone and cylinder head shot

I'm looking at it on Wednesday but was wondering whether I could tell easily which one of the above it is likely to be? I know to check the coolant level, oil ingress, oil level etc but is there other things I can do?

Cheers

Just to close this off - I looked it it and now water in the coolant and plenty of emulsified oil when I unscrewed the cap - simple case of blown gasket!
