I'm to lazy to go outside to check, but when you pull the red leaver back, doesn't the yellow lever jump up.
Perhaps this is what is making him think it is coming out of 4wd?

If I remember right the Austin Gipsy had a yellow and a red lever and you could select front wheel drive, rear wheel drive and four wheel drive in both ratios, GREAT SYSTEM, pity about the other bits though.

ill have to look into it then, its always been like that since i bought it, thought it was a bit strange at first but figured it was how it was supposed to b

ye if i push the yellow lever down it engages 4wd, and when i pull the red lever bak into low range, the yellow lever pops bak up. i figured that it was in 2wd then??

No, still 4WD until you push the red lever forward to the high range position.

or forget to lock em :D

was out on a lake fishing a few years back when a saw this nob in a hi-lux pickup having trouble spinnig like fook for about 10 minutes .
then he just locked it and walked off, he only walked over a mile to the farmer that owned the lake and got him out with his tractor to pull him out :D
did'nt have the heart (or inclanation) to tell him he had'nt locked the free wheeling hubs
