Thanks Turboman you're making my evening! Lol.

Head gasket isn't a bad job, and not dear either, under twenty for a quality gasket, bolts can often be re-used.

Fuel problem may be just a nylon pipe or an olive! ;) If the pump is toast, look around for a running second hand pump, there are a few around after Tdi re-engines. Or a good recon, if your motor is good, lots of money, but should last a lifetime!:)

The Landy is pretty solid so I'm def interested in repair. I'll take a closer look in the week if I can get it running.
It's not going to make the meet next weekend though so looks like I'm taking the works van lol.
Thanks for the advice.

Hey Turboman, looks like it's the head gasket??

Did as you suggested. Removed rocker cover and found 3rd injector area (from front) bellowing blue smoke straight away. It fired up but raced away on full throttle Immediately.

(Made lovely oil splatter in engine bay too)

Not sure how well it came out in the pictures. At full revs on a Sunday evening I didn't want to upset the neighbours [emoji56][emoji15]

As you said if it is the head gasket, that's got to be better than IP [emoji12]

Do I go buy a gasket set?

Thanks

I would seriously just fit a tdi as you may end up chasing problems with the 2.5 n/a.

I'm not set up to do engine swaps. I think I shall try and rescue this first. If it is just the head gasket and I'm hoping that's the most it is. I'd rather sort that and go from there.

I'm only using this Landy as a hobby drive ( sunny days and club meets )

I wouldn't fit a Tdi either, they are a good engine, but mostly very high mileage now, and the 2.5 is a proper British engine, no Bosch stuff on it yet, much more appropriate to an old landy! :)

Head gasket should sort it, get a good one, Payen or Elring, and clean up thoroughly. You may find some combustion chambers fall out when you take the head off, or are cracked, they are available, and not too difficult to replace.

When you have done the gasket, try and find out where the air is getting in to the fuel system, often ther wil be fuel leaking at the same place.

Just a thought, but if the revs are racing away, have you checked for sticking throttle cable?

Thanks for the info. I'm ordering a complete Payen kit from Paddocks and will start the strip down tomorrow.
Not sure about combustion chambers but I'll check Paddocks and see if they have them.

If you're at the meet next weekend introduce yourself and I shall certainly sort you a few beers [emoji3][emoji482]

Yes checked that and the advance lever. Even checked the tick over settings and the throttle setting on the pump.
When I first got it it did it but I found that the banjo nut on top of the fuel filter wasn't drilled. I drilled it out and the fuel had somewhere to go, so the revs died down. I thought maybe it was blocked or couldn't get rid of excess fuel but the return pipe back to the tank is clear and I've had it running into a bucket.

Once I get the head sorted that'll be fun for another day [emoji41][emoji19]

Anyone following this thread may like to know that as far as I can ascertain I don't think air was getting into the fuel system. After manually priming each time I couldn't work out why after a few minutes the engine would stall and need repriming.

I think the lift pump needs replacing as the 'cam connection' doesn't appear to be working nearly as well as the priming side.

Il update when replaced.

Lift pumps are cheap, try and get Delphi one, some of the cheapies are ****.

Check out the metal pipe into the tank, sometimes they rust through, also carefully examine the plastic pipe leading for tank to lift pump ;)

Fitted new lift pump. Britpart but that's all Padcocks stock apparantly.

Comes with its own bolts and adapter kit which didn't entirely fit Buddy so I had to improvise. Good bit is I've fitted some braided hose and can now see there are definitely no air bubbles in the fuel line.

Just back from a run and it runs great. All I have to do now is build up enough trust to go further than one side of the village to the other without worrying I need a tow truck.

I forgot how rickety driving a Landy is [emoji12]

Thanks to all that gave their input please watch out as I'm bound to be asking last more questions when I start tinkering
