For the technically minded, scientists and engineers: Snake oil?

A friend of mine on FB, who has done work on my 300tdi, likes a page on FB, that is potentially snake oil.

Is this an actual viable alternative to dismantling and refurbish? I doubt it...

Do we really want to put hydrogen and oxygen into the air intake? Will it actually do anything?

Maybe there are piccies of scantily clad girls on there and that is why he likes it.

Seems very similar to Terraclean. ....which works but then so does misting water into the intake.

It's easy to find glowing testimonials from professional mechanics but not so easy to find any sort of testimonial from one that hasnt shelled out a small fortune on the franchise

agreed - if you strip the flowery words from the two websites, there isn't much in the way of actual technical information. Although, how does misting water into the intake help?

I used to have a Supra with up to 2 bar boost. I used water injection to stop detonation above 1 bar. That worked, and whenever I stripped the engine it was sparkling clean, plugs were also always clean.

However not sure how modern ECU's would react to it.

Strip the head off an engine that's blown a head gasket and there's never any doubt whether any coolant has been making it to a combustion chamber or not

A decent engine, in decent fettle shouldn't need any 'extra' cleaning. Yes, it probably works, but it's only the same as an 'Italian Tune-up' .. find a longish hill where you can run at high revs in third gear for a mile or so, and do so!! What this does is exactly the same, gets the engine revving freely, whilst under load, so high exhaust temps are achieved which burns off any carbon deposits. If you can't find a long enough hill, then go for a high revs drive between a couple of motorway junctions .. You're aiming to get the exhaust temperatures high to achieve exactly the same effect as the 'not quite snake oil, but close' touted above ..

The misting water does exactly the same thing the site says introducing gas into the mixture does .. makes the exhaust burn hotter, water is H2O .. extra Oxygen means extra heat during burn time.

They have to do it this way as they can't get the engine under load whilst stood (without a Dyno), they've found a way to monetise the 'mechanics dash round the block' to burn off crud, but look professional doing it and can do it outside your house.

I did hear that making a small hydrogen reactor for your car as many have done, not so much increases MPG but burns fuel much more efficiently reducing smoke and keeps the internals spotless.
I want one just to reduce smoke.....................

Have you tried putting a full bottle of REDEX in, I did this to mi dad's Montego once and looked like something from the Red Arrows

Un if you can get hold of snake oil, I'lll take 500mls.

Hate to think what my engine would do without the carbon build up sealing the oil in.

I once had a Hilman Hunter and after a few weeks of noisy tappets decided to take the rocker box cover off.
There was another cover under the first. A black shiny one. Never seeing this before I went to lift it off but it crumbled under my fingers.
Yep, it was a 1mm thick carbon deposit that had covered the inside of the cover. Amazing how it stayed in place when the cover came off.

I blew the bits off and hurriedly put the cover back on. Best not to, I thought

The furthest forward, highest up evidence of a leak was from the leading edge of the lift pump. The riveted cover on the vac pump was dry, but wet around where the pump connects to the block.

up in the air again tomorrow to see if there is an obvious place
