After fitting new batteries to the fob and the warning still appears am i right in thinking it will go off after a few days. all ok other than this.

not asked him. So, how dose the range rover know when the battery has been changed?

Part of the data the FOB transmits includes a flag to denote a low battery condition, if the replacement batteries are good and the correct ones the message should go away next time you use the FOB. If there is any corrosion on the battery contacts that will also give a low battery indication.
