Flushing heater matrix question - help

The heater on my 300tdi is blowing cold air so after reading up I plan to see if the the cables need adjusting/are working and also flush the heater matrix.

One question which I cant seem to find the answer to, and apologies as im no mechanic

Do i need to drain the coolant system or clamp the hoses before I remove them from the heater matrix?

I doesnt say so in what ive read but if not wont all the coolant come out?

I did read that adding a dishwasher tablet cleans the whole water system very well, put one in and run engine for a while and drain and replace

two clamps where pipes go into matrix

You can buy proper hose clamps, or just wrap a cloth around and use molegrips

I didnt need to flush it in the end, the levers werent doing their job opening the flap but I fixed it and now I cant believe how hot the heater is, proper roasting!

Kettle descaler also works well. Run it around until its hot then give it a few days to work its magic. Drain and flush. Sorted.
