Hi all

Well re this post
http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f7/been-look-defender-90-what-should-i-look-out-153768.html

have only gone and bought it, got it at a good price.

pick up
defender 90

been under it for 2 day exploring what i have bought and what it needs for MOT

Bought as a non starter with duff starter, has not been moved for at least 5 months let alone run

Have had the starter off cleaned it and all connections and that works.

have discovered the reason for no brakes, front caliper leaking, seal kit fitted and waiting on pistons ( didn't order them at same time as seal kit:frusty:
Short commercial break gotta love Famous four phoned at 16.38 yesterday for a seal kit, seal kit was in my hand at 9.15 this morning, hope they can do the same with the pistons

have fitted a new spring, shock and cage thing< one side had been doen, bits for the other came with it

have also poked around where it needs some welding, rear crossmember and battery tray

will pop some pics up in a bit

now just got to start it, got fuel at injector at good pressure now i have changed the filter

could be a drag behing a John Deere once i have the brakes working...!!

any tips re starting other than big battery

On starting...pre-warm 15-20 secs...dont touch throttle at all, turn key, when she starts blip throttle not b4 otherwise you will never get her going. Welcome to my world, poor fecker, get a 200tdi in asap.

here is the photos
Land Rover Zone - Cavey_P38's Album: Project Defender

Got a 200tdi in the father in laws classic which is a good runner but being broken for spares etc

Long term plan will be strip and sand blast then 200 tdi but, not right now want it done before we start harvest, which will be bloody early this year, so plan being to use it as is this year then strip feb march next.

that exhuast dont look right (tail pipe ) but sounds like a bargain (even if it has got a shed load a work to do ):D

Cheers for the tips re starting storm, yeah work wise, not worried about it being mint

it will gather some bumps and scratches round the farm and hedgerows

caliper is waiting on pistons, got the spring all fitted late afternoon.

just starting and some welding left as long as the engine is a good one, if not 200tdi early

have the room and the ramp helps massivly with stuff like this.

i have 2 P38's ( i donor for a project on the other one) missus runs a P38 as a everyday car

father in law has 300 tdi disco as work motor and an on old 2 door early disco to tow caravan with me.
Brother in law ( flipper on here) has a Disco 2 which was a V8 and is now a 200tdi

so the ramp is very handy with al those 4 x 4 with bit lumps of hardware to remove etc.

Had the auto box and transfer out of the project motor the other week would def not want to do that without a ramp.

needed some creative thinking with one...!!

yeah exhaust def looks a bit odd from underneath too but have no idea where it should go will pop some more pics up tomorrow

then hopefully someone will tell me

td exhuast should come out lower and slightly more to the rear exit just behind the wheel

Well, got the wheeels on< no caliper on ones side but clamped the pipe.

towed it up the road behind the missus in her P38 in low, popped the clutch and she is a runner babe.

Engine sounded sweet once it had settled down, gave a quick thrash then remebered no brakes so have put her back on the ramp.
starts on the key first time at the minute
got some odd electrical faults,

sidelights i have rear lights, put on dip or high and loose rear lights.

only got 1 indicator

ALso havent seen the fusebox yet..?

back to it tomorrow, will be interesting to see if she goes on the key in the morning

tell me about it

when straight away on the key this morning

fixed 2 indicators and the fog light, then lost another indicator.

have now found a birds nest of wires twisted together under the tub at the rear crossmember

re wire for indicator and then believe the reversing light which looks like it comes out the back of the gearbox

Might have another go at that in the morning

Also lots of oil around timing case so am going to change the front belt, how bad a job is it to do ?

also is there a front crank seal in there to replace?

steam clean underneath i reckon first as it is well oily.

Timing belt isn't too bad

Things to look out for are:

1) ensure you use the speacial pins (or improvise) to lock the timing pump and flywheel

2) undoing the crank bolt can be a bugger - usually loctited on - again special tool to lock the pulley, or improvise with a breaker bar and turn the engine over (with the fuel solonid disconnected!)

3) make sure you turn the belt twice by hand and retighten before refixing cover

ebay sell tools for the timing pin etc quite cheaply - this is the kit I used:

PULLER for 300tdi CRANK & TIMING PULLEYS + TIMING PINS | eBay UK

As for the job itself - this photo guide might help:

Ive found famous four to be a touch on the expensive side for parts which is a shame as its only 15mins away. Try rimmerbros in lincoln. Not 100% how good their delivery service is but price wise they are spot on and probably have 98% of landy bits on the shelf.

Cheers for the tip

will have a look at rimmers before placing an order as i have a big list

the job lists seem to be getting longer as i fix one thing something else comes to my attention, started with 2 indicators not working,

got all 4 going then lost one and a headlight ( sealed beam unit what a pain so going to change both units to halogen)

rocker cover gasket, timing belt so i know when it was last done and going to do front crank oil seal at same time

fix front brakes but pedal was poor so took drums off the back and need to 2 slave cylinders as they are both rusted to hell

timing belt re special tools do i still need them if it is a 2.5 N/A

re front pulley, in laws are farmers they have 3/4 and 1" drive socket sets and a lot of lateral thinking, and it rained today means no hay cutting tomorrow, gonna be waiting for bits me thinks

need 2 bits of exhaust as well but the whole system seems cheaper.

so should get some bits on it this week< MoT next week or week after< got to go to Germany for 5 days work on fri, which will hold proceding up a bit

ha ha

must be defender ownership cos the P38 seems to cost less

but that has not been stood up for at least 6 months

(i suspect more)

checked out rimmers and they were cheaper on only 2 bits but about £3 per wheel cylinder rest famous four were well cheaper on exhaust

now waiting on bits til thurs
