Having checked all the usual causes of this fault I eventually found that the two pin connector and socket of the brake fluid level switch on the brake master cylinder were slightly corroded causing an open circuit brake switch/ low brake fluid level signal to be sent to the ABS ecu which then activated the warning lamp. Electrical contact cleaner dissolved the corrosion and then the plug and socket were packed with an electrical waterproofing compound.
