Petrols are prone to that, mostly when an ATF leak gets on a cat. Although on this occasion it possibly self destructed in shame at being traded in against a Toyota.

Yip, looked like a typical case of Spontaneous Combustion Through Total Embarrassment .Many Range Rovers do this as an objection to being traded in for Japanese 4x4's.

Maybe it thought they would fill it's tank with water and dry rice, then when it started to ferment and swelled under pressure from the gas build up, pop it with a bayonet. That used to give the Japs great pleasure in the prison camps i believe.
