Hi All,

This is my first post after researching an issue with my car. I have searched posts & seen lots of instances of the rear main oil seal failing like mine on my 2013 FL2 SD4 auto.

I have 2 questions really on this as per below:

1: I have owned the car for 8000 miles. I have RAC extended warranty. The cover list doesn't specify seals are excluded. Is it worth pushing on this as it seems LR were covering them under warranty initially? It's just over 70k mileage now.

2: Is there a better after market brand I should look for on this that would be better than replacing with a LR part that is known to fail?

Appreciate any advise before I spend £500+ on this one.

Is this the main crank shaft oil seal on the side of the engine next to the auto gearbox?

Yes; I believe so from what I have been lead to believe on quotes for the work. It's been quoted as 'rear main crank oil seal'.
On a FL1, I was quoted £600+vat at the main dealer to change said oil seal. Seal was £35 on top. Not much difference in price at independents. This was 10 years ago. For comparison... its about the same amount of work on a FL2. A main dealer will take the easy option and pop the engine/gearbox/transfer box out in one piece, then separate the engine/gearbox, then replace said seal, then pop it all back. If yer got lifting gear like they have then it's just as quick to do it that way as opposed to faffing about trying to get the gearbox oft the engine when the engine is still in the car. Not much room available but more on the FL2 than v6 FL1.

I have come across ocasional crank main seals failing but its not a regular thing like seeing them pop up on the forum weekly. I was told mine on my v6 was leaking but it was actually a leak on the cylinder head at the back because 2 bolts were lose. The wind blows oil everywhere when yer at speed. Then in runs down the side of the engine. So the leak source isn't always easy to locate.

How serious is the leak? I would be wanting to check where it's leaking myself.

I would use the LR seal myself. They spent 9 years working on Freelander 2 production. Feedback on failures into solving production problems is a big thing in LR, to reduce warranty costs.

If it were mine and I put it in a garage I would be careful who I gave it to. I would want them to have worked on Freelander 2's doing this sort of work before. And it being obvious from their knowledge and setup. There's a lot they can fuk up when doing the work.

I have an SD4 anorl now.
