Freelander 2 (LR2) FL2 boot opens too fast sometimes

Hi all, recently said goodbye to the old mk1 hippo, and picked up a 2. 9/10 times the boot opens normally, but every now and then it flies open really fast and forcefully.

Gave me a good wack on the jaw the other week, really wakes you up in the morning. Another time my hand slipped as I was trying to slow it, and it flung up and hit the top with such force it bounced back down for a moment. Doesn't seem like it's doing the hinges much good.

Not sure how to approach this one as it's intermittent, is this maybe hot weather causing the gas to expand faster? Doesn't seem to be happening so much now it's cooled off.

Sounds like a fault with one if the gas struts.
I'd replace them before it breaks a tooth, or a hinge on the tail gate, as both things would cost much for to fix than a pair of replacement struts.
