Good Evening All,

I have a slight issue I'm struggling to put my finger on.

Recently my hippo has developed a rather annoying symptom, it hesitates when cursing at a constant speed. If driving on a motorway, or long road I can feel the engine losing power then clearing. It's really awkward to write the symptoms. During full acceleration there is no issue.

I do have another issue, but I've had this issue since owning the vehicle. On cld start up, it starts fine but doesn't want to rev for a few seconds and is a little lumpy. There is a bit of smoke durin this but clears within seconds.
I'll put a video up of the start up tomorrow.

Anyone got any ideas?

Cheers Craig

First fault could be the MAF signal is reduced, due to the MAF aging. The ECU uses the MAF signal to calculate fuel requirements while the EGR is active. If the signal is generally low. Fuel calculations errors under EGR conditions will affect the torque the engine generates. The EGR is in operation while cruising at light to mid throttle.

The other cold start thing could be the glow plugs. Mine is splutters a bit when started from cold. I have 1 dead glow plug, that I can't remove.

If this needs fixing, which it sounds like it does, then I'd say "reset" the TD4 to a state where it "should" be OK - so replace the fuel pressure harness with the updated one (incase its got the inherrant rust/contact issues) and replace the fuel pump pressure regulator O rings (in case they are perished). You could also add replacing the fuel filter and make yourself absolutely sure the lift pump is working OK. The TD4 may be chain driven so doesn't need belts changing regularly - but the items listed here fail and cause problems Luckily (annoyingly?) these are simple cheap parts and worth spending a few bob to have a decent car.. As Nodge states, the MAF is probably the running issue and the glow plugs the starting issue, but a "reset" won't harm before more expensive parts are replaced. I suppose it depends if you are doing the work, or your paying someone to do it.

Cheers for all the advise guys.

My first question will be, where is the fuel pressure harness? I've never seen it while working on the TD4. In reality I've never looked for it. Secondly I've priced a few on fleabay and their around £80, is that right?

There is a good chance my maf is gone, it's been off and on the vehicle loads recently. All four of my glow plugs are stuck in, I've tried heat, wd40, a good run trying to get them hot but fail at every occasion.

The harness is YMQ503320 - I think you should be looking at about £40 for that.

Unplugging the MAF will put the ECU into a default programme map. It doesn't activate the EGR when the MAF is disconnected. So try it and see what happens. It will put a warning light on, but that is only telling you that the engine isn't running within the emissions window. If it works correctly with the MAF disconnected, there's your problem;)
