Evening All,

Having an issue with my trusty TD4, the speedo always reads 140mph, as soon as the ignition is turned on, before the engine is even started and all the time you are driving it never moves, just reads 140mph and as such is also clocking miles up at this rate the whole time ignition is on.

I did plug into scanner and it shows all four wheel speeds are showing fault, I have replaced these with known working ones but does not change anything, even with codes reset.

Anybody ever seen or heard about this and have any tips for me?!

Does your abs still work if you break sharp on grass or loose surface? Does yer feel the brakes pulse?

One of our TD4 manuals did this during a delivery trip to Conway. Its fine now but showing a lot more mileage on the odometer.

the abs appears not to be working, and when i checked fault codes with snap on scanner it said all 4 speed sensors are out of value, i'm guessing its a faulty control board in the abs pump. are they the same on all freelanders of that age or do i need a td4 specific one?

Just A quick thing to try before you condem the abs ecu.....
Disconnect the battery and leave it disconnected for 30 to 40 minutes. this will totally discharge any ecu's, relays, diodes ect ect.... You never know it may do the trick.

and the answer to your question on the board is they are all different.......
If it turns out you have a faulty board I have a good working one that may interest you?
It's not uncommon for abs ecu's to go faulty on freelanders Iv'e just spent ages trying to source one for mine similar fault only my speedo didn't work at all and had no comm's with the abs ecu.....

Ok, I am finally gonna fix this fault, I have new reluctor rings, new sensors, a second hand abs pump and a second hand hand set of clocks. Is the only way to rest fault codes with scanner or can I just leave battery off?! Is there any thing else I might need apart from good luck and a bucket of enthusiasm?!

I recently witnessed a similar fault on a 2001 td4 auto. Speedo jumped to max if the electrics or engine was on. Both front abs sensors reported a fault with my hawkeye (open circuit) and when measuring them with a multimeter they were both open circuit. When 1 of the 2 front sensors was replaced the speedo fault stopped. The quick method to replace them is to just plug the new sensor into the yellow connector. The yellow connector on the sensor nearest the pump is the easiest to get to. This will at least allow you to do a quick test. When the new sensor is plugged in the abs will see this. Speedo should stop doing daft things now. Then you have the task of fitting the sensors properly.

You will probably need a code reader to clear codes. Some may clear if the fault is fixed, but we don't know if this is the case without testing the theory. It's possible your fault light may go off when the fault is fixed. Again, we don't know without testing this theory. I assume you have fault lights on the dash?

The Freelander I was looking at had other problems like loss of ability to move by itself. Not sure what the fault was with that in the end as it was sold.

The only warning light is the handbrake/brake fault warning light, no abs light or hdc. Well, with mot time looming, I didn't want to be spending data with it in bits, hence I have just collected all the bits up so I am prepared.

So, I'm still not sure what was at fault, as I just fitted the second hand abs pump, two new sensors and two new reluctor rings on the front, and hey presto no more dodgy speedo or brake warning light.

As said before both front abs sensors failing caused the speedo to go to max on another Freelander I looked at. The computers compare what the front wheels v other items like engine revs etc are doing. Max reading may be some sort of default error. Bit like dividing by zero.
