Hello again, been a while but since your invaluable help on here my beloved old FL1 has trundled on in 2WD world, happily passing the 200,000 miles mark! Thank you. So thought I'd pick your expert brains again with an intermittent power problem. Searched on here before anyone shouts at me ;) and from others similar symptoms I'm thinking turbo valve or something like that? Sometimes just nothing there when I press accelerator going uphill or even happening on the flat. Can happen in any gear any speed, not really noticed smoking or whistling sounds. Trying to narrow it down so a friend who's looking at it this weekend doesn't get fed up spending all day searching out what it isn't :) Any help much appreciated. Don't forget keep it simple....I'm not a mechanic, just a happy FL owner trying to squeeze a few more miles out of my much loved Landy :)

Could be MAF related does it feel like it is going into limp mode? you could always unplug the MAF for now and see how that goes, cost is nothing but about 40 minutes of your time.

Hello Arctic2, thanks for your reply. I'm not sure about limp mode, isn't that usually accompanied with a warning light? No warning lights on mine. It does pick back up again but not usually until I've got to the top of the hill or basically until I've eased off the accelerator and will bowl along quite happily on the flat (no deceleration) when it's doing it but with no acceleration if I put my foot down. I've googled a MAF sensor, thank you I'll get him to look into that.

well I have just been through this but only this week finally sorted it, I pope in to my landrover garage NOT main dealer after a couple of month suffering this problem , he put his computer onto my car and for £30 he was able to tell me that is was vacuum problem so we went through it all we put on a new valve on the back of the engine and a new one on the front as there are two but the front one has one pipe blocked off and then we renewed all vacuum pipes we used 4mm internal diameter petrol/vacuum pipe, one pipe we took of had a bend in it ,this was leading to the front valve and the pipe was really crushed , and this was original pipe put on by LR and now the car is different it has more grunt in it just like my old freelander .

Boost solenoid?

That's great information thanks guys :) It's difficult to diagnose when most of the time it's running and accelerating brilliantly. Fingers crossed it's one of the not too expensive solutions you've mentioned and the Landy will live on :D

try swapping your hose first it may just be that I had enough hence swapping all the egr solenoid and the turbo boost one. The computer said it was the one on the back of the engine
but I had just had enough of messing around I need my car to be reliable having bad legs.

Exactly the same symptoms I'm experiencing on my old diesel. I recently drove on a badly made road and it shook the poor old girl to pieces.
On the fast road going home the engine progressively lost power. The more I pushed the throttle the worse it gets.
Still starts on the button and runs ok at low revs but get to a hill it starts to stall/miss .
One major fault was the + battery terminal had been shaken loose. It made contact to start but would lift completely off the battery at higher revs causing the engine management light to come on and total loss of power. Of course when she slowed down it would make contact again.
I put fresh derv in just now but no different.
No smoke from exhaust or noises, could I have upset or damaged the ECU ?
Noticed slight loss of MPG but as said all was fine till the bumpy road.
Having problems finding trustworthy or knowledgeable garage over here so any help appreciated.

Well lovely weather to be outside and under the bonnet  ...so all we got round to was changing the air filter, and you won't be surprised to hear it wasn't that haha!! Think it will have to go into the garage next week, I will point them in the direction of the turbo boost solenoid or the MAF as per your posts on here so hopefully they wont charge me for hours spent just looking for the problem! We found it tricky to locate the solenoid on my TD4 2001 engine, unfortunately in a completely different place to the 'helpful' photos I had printed off for him

While you changed the air filter did you unplug the MAF and leave it unplugged and take it for a drive to see if it made any difference ?

No he did't unplug anything sorry, just drove it to the parts place without an air filter in at all (it still did the accelerator problem thing) so he then put the new air filter in when we got back. Don't think his heart was really in it :/

p.s. we asked the parts place for price of a turbo boost solenoid thingy and he say £108!! I'm sure I've seen on here someone said they got one for £40 ish. Any recommendations please?

Hi all, can anyone tell me on my FL1 D where the maf plug is ?
Are you saying basically if I unplug it and the car runs normally that is the problem ?
Also in that case why reconnect it ?
Or will that cause more trouble ?
Thanks for any help.

IF it's the td4 ..
then under the cover by the oil filler :

Must say looks nothing like my engine, from what I can establish she was made for the Spanish market and then imported into Lanzarote.
Someone said it's a Perkins diesel ?

Many thanks for all your advice, I will look for it today on the bulkhead. Should I disconnect it and see how she runs ?
No warning lights come on, I loose all power when overtaking ( cyclist or horses lol ) but no smoke from exhaust and I think fuel consumption is worse.
