Hi there,
While y'all in the northern hemisphere may be contemplating long summer days stuck in traffic jams on the way to the beach, here in NZ I am eagerly awaiting the start of the ski season. I was therefore somewhat bemused to read in my Freelander's owners manual that only LR approved snow chains should only be fitted and only to 195/80x15 tryes. As it seems a bit innocuous to have a 4x4 that won't take snow chains, does anyone know whether it is possible to fit chains to other tyre sizes and if so, what brand of snow chain is best for ease of fitting and performance? My Freelander has 215/65x16 alloys and, as far as my untrained eye can tell, plenty of clearance around the wheel arch so I can't see what the problem is (apart from I'd rather not scratch my alloys).

It's no suprise that they want you to buy LR-branded chains - have you seen the price of them!

I've seen them fitted to non standard tyres with no negative feedback - I guess there's potential problems but as long as you are cautious ...

Cheers

Blippie

Thanks Blippie, I would certainly prefer not to fork out for LR-brand chains if others will do the job just as well (or better!) for less. However, I'm still not sure why the LR accessories brochure offers 'normal' snow chains for 195x15" tyres but a dubious-looking 'snow traction system' for 215x16" or 225x17" tyres. If anyone can shed any light on the reason or has used non-LR chains on 16" alloys, I'd be grateful for your insights.
Cheers!

Don't know much about it. But if you check the clearance between the back of the tyre and the front suspension leg you'll see that with alloys fitted there aint much room for chains.
