Well got back to work to find the security garage door locks had arrived, so armed with four matching key locks I nipped out at lunch to work out how to fit them to the Station Wagon......

Original idea was to fit inside the door skins and have the 70mm bolt going through the door frame and into the B or C pillar depending on door.... however that would have seen the bolt heads on the outside of the door and a target for a battery grinder, also the bolt would have fouled on the door seal so decided to fit to the strongest part of the door meaning bolt heads are hidden and bolt fits into receiver easily... drilled a couple of pilot holes n tried a trial fit...

just 3 more doors top go... they have hardened receivers but I need to buy a larger drill bit to fit them and once the doors are finished the bolt threads will be cut level and a blob of weld to prevent em being undone...

no Landy is totally safe but this should deter / slow em down a little...........

Good idea, I've got those locks on my garage, trouble is the key is long so must be a pain (literally) to have your keys in your pocket?
 
Thanks Jam1... Good call, can't wait for the update... Been on the verge of having deadlocks fitted but £100 a door fitted!

£55 all in, and that was paying extra to get em all on the same key, that is for four as its a station wagon,

I went for them as the bolt is 70mm when extended, only ones I have found with a long enough throw on the bolt, good 1.5" into the c post and once the hardened receiver is fitted they will be pretty secure

on a side note fitting the fronts the same will see the bolt protected by the rear door hinges as it will latch between the upper hinge bolts so doubly difficult to attack... will post pics when done

I saw those but the bolt throw was nowhere near enough on the ones I saw to suit a defender door, there is quite a large gap between door frame and b/c pillar , if you look at my pic you will see how far the bolt has to bridge...... far more than a nice close van door seal :)

however you are right about the price difference :)

removed the screw but the locks still don't want to come apart i'm afraid and don't want to force it into bits and end up needing a new lock lol

fronts will be fitted same as rears in my case... I have 2 piece doors all round with aluminium military tops so no issues with winding windows to have to worry about :)

i like what you are doing, but it seems a bit pointless.

They could remove the windows to get in or a few other ways if they really wanted to.

Thanks for trying all the same :) Was thinking earlier, it's probably better that they don't come apart so easily really.

Another thought I had, how unique are the keys? I remember reading about a company that were selling van vaults, they were buying in the lock barrels and ended up with ones where the key shape repeats every 500 or so units. Some boys working for a council could open each others tool boxes. Heard about it with pad locks too.

Don't know if its pointless... Pointless is doing nothing to a vehicle which has so many known security flaws. If all the doors are locked tight with none standard deadbolts, yes they could smash a window but there is more risk in doing so. They might be scum but they ate not stupid, if they see a Defender with additional security its a deterrent as it takes longer to steal and increased the risk if being caught. Case in point is the Defender that thieves thought about taking, the owner has their photos on facebook at the minute. They apparently had trouble with the locks and went down the road and stole another truck. Every little additional security feature adds seconds and they all add up. Of coarse they could just lift it but there are third party alarms that have motion sensor etc. just my two penny worth.
