Hi guys,

I have got a new rear step gas ram to fit on my Disco2 2001 TD5.

The old one had come apart so the rear step was always down. The problem is this: the new one is slightly too long at its extended position to make it possible to bolt it in at both ends and it is so strong that I cannot find a suitable way to compress it to get it to the right length.

I tried fitting one end, then using a jack under the other end to compress the little gas shock so I could get the other end in, but it is so strong that it pushes out at an angle instead. Sure there must be a simple way to do this, but I have not managed to find it!

Anyone who has done this care to share the secret?

Thanks!

David

It 'should' be the correct item as far as I am aware - it was supplied for that purpose. Admittedly it was britpart rather than LR, but I was under the impression that the strut was supposed to be under some compression at all times. I did wonder if it ought to have come with some kind of holder to keep it compressed to the correct length, that could then be cut off once fitted.

If you dont mind could you tell me how much you paid for the part - my strut doesn't work any more but the step can be pushed up and it stays up.
Reluctant to pay the £50 that most want.
