Fitting a P38 4.0 engine into my v8 defender

I've recently blown my 3.9 vbelt, and have decided to replace it with a 4.0 serp&gems.

I started removing the engine from a p38 today.

Everything was pretty much how i expected it, apart from THE P38 HAS A HUGE OIL COOLER......

Is there a reason why i need this? I've never seen one in a v8 defender.

Thoughts please....

Yes, it cools the oil

Do p38 engines run hotter that your average RV8 then?

no just water. Further more, no one has ever mentioned the need for one in all the years I've had it.....

I think the 50th had the same engine as the p38..... i wonder what they did.

They had the oil cooler on rad. I thought it was only the 3.5 that didn't?
